At my wits end - wtf can this be?

About 18 months ago I started having digestive issues - it started after night outwhere I drank too much, ate a dodgy veggie burger and chips in the early hours of the morning, and had D&V the next day - nothing dramatic and I put it down to a nasty hangover/ over indulging. A few weeks later I started getting a pain - about an inch below my belly button, slightly to the left, and in a horizontal line - I could actually draw where the pain is. Over the last year this has developed into more general pain, severe constipation (although it's more the fact I don't feel the urge to go) and awful bloating. I've been tested for everything you can think of. Kept a food diary - nothing obvious. However - just before Xmas I ate something that disagreed with me, and (sorry TMI) when I went to the toilet, it was explosive and I felt 'properly' cleared out for the first time since it started, despite having tried laxatives a few times. Had a couple of months almost symptom free after that. But I'd been on the waiting list for a CT colonogram and ever since I had that a few weeks ago it's been worse and I'm in pain most days. My GP has been useless, and the specialist has told me it's probably 'just' IBS. So whyyyy after the explosive poop incident did it almost clear up?! Like something had been expelled from my body that had caused it? And why is it now worse than it was before after the colonogram?

Does anyone have any ideas of what else I should ask the doctor please? I'm really really fed up.

@Modernskylines I have tried both Symprove and Biomel, both for a couple of months each. I'd say it actually made it worse, particularly the Symprove. Currently taking Optibac but doesn't seem to be doing much. Psyllium husk makes the pain worse. I feel like I've tried pretty much everything obvious!

Sorry there was too much to fit in the original post - I've cut a lot of sugar and carbs out of my diet, and eating much more fruit and veg etc, I drunk a lot ofwater amd have really cut down in booze. My diet wasn't awful to start with either! I'm out every day walking the dog, could do more exercise admittedly.

How old are you? Have you had a colonoscopy and blood tests?

Is it linked to your menstrual cycle?

EmmaMaria · 09/03/2025 16:32

Has anyone tested for e-coli?

Haveapotato · 09/03/2025 16:33

I'm about 9 lbs lighter than when this all started- but no sudden dramatic weight loss which us what I thought you meant as that's what the Dr has asked. And I didn't say zero carbs or sugar or booze, I said I'd cut down significantly.

@Haveapotato has your poo been tested for infection/inflammation?

Haveapotato · 09/03/2025 16:36

@ThatThisThatYou @EmmaMaria I've been tested for H pylori, I've had crohns /colitis tests and for bowel cancer. Currently awaiting results for a coeliac blood test but I really don't think it's that. Also awaiting colonogram results but the consultant seems to think it won't show anything. Def not tested for e-coli

It sounds like IBS to me, especially when you talk about constipation, no urge to go and then an explosion which made you feel better. And the pain in a line, too. All very familiar and I can relate.
