Food poisoning... blood

Possible TMI

Am on holiday and yesterday came down with sudden diarrhoea. I thought my period had arrived as there was blood but as I've run out of matter to pass there's just blood and it's not menstrual.

I've taken Imodium which has helped as I have to get on and go out as it's just me and DS11.

I've not eaten for nearly 24 hours. Will be getting taxis to and from museums today as am worried will feel unwell on a long walk. Museums will have loos so will do my best.

Not sure what I'm after really... I'm worried about all the blood and I'm a plane ride away from home, flying back tomorrow and scared of being ill on plane (luckily flight only an hour).

Should I keep up the Imodium and hope for the best and seek GP when home? Can't access anything here really. I'm scared.

I wouldn’t be going anywhere today if you are still having diarrhoea, if it’s stopped then maybe go out for a couple of hours, the blood is worrying but could just be down to inflammation of intestines/bowels, so you definitely need to keep an eye on this and if it continues you will need it investigating. I would cut down on Imodium and just take one dose just to see you through today, you can always take another if needed to fly home, but hopefully if it’s food poisoning then once the diarrhoea has passed, you will be ok and try and eat some bland food and drink lots of water.

this Is personal advice, not medical advice. I would say it depends on how you feel and how it goes today, on how much blood there is and on whether you have any idea where it’s from (eg do you have piles or could it be coming from your anus rather than inside). If it’s all settled down today and you can drink and maybe eat then I’d wait till home then contact the gp. But if not then find help wherever you are.

What colour is the blood?

TheProvincialLady · 19/02/2025 12:09

Some kinds of food poisoning do cause blood, eg campylobacter which is a very common cause of traveller’s diarrhoea. It isn’t necessarily anything to worry about unless you’re in severe pain, there is a lot of it, or if it doesn’t clear completely in a few days.

Imodium isn’t a good idea either - sorry!

This sounds awful OP. Good luck today and for your trip home. Keep up the inmodium until you are home at least.

I don't think you should stay in if you've had diarrhoea it could be a bug and not fair to spread

Thanks guys.

Blood is bright red. ☹️

I've made it out but am spending a lot of time sitting or in the loo. I had to for DS. Not going to eat today though!

Some types of food poisoning do cause blood.

taking Imodium is NOT sensible as your body needs to get this stuff out of your body or you can end up really really sick.

I strongly suggest you see a doctor whilst you are away for proper medical advice.
