Tips on administering suppositories with an 8 month old baby please...!?

DD2 was born with an imperforate anus and has had all the surgeries etc. including colostomy reversal in February. Since being able to poo, she has had constipation so we've been dosing her up with lactulose for a while. Saw the consultant last week who prescribed suppositories every other day, have only just got the prescription yesterday (long story!).

Anyway, having got them, we've read the leaflet and it says that under 10yrs should only be administered with medical assistance . The grown up instructions say to keep the thing in there for 30 mins - how are we going to do this with a bouncy 8 month old baby!? Any tips welcome...

(have been on my specialist website with lots of other mums who've been through the same but its down for maintenance and I need to do this as early as possible this morning so thought I'd check here...).

Cheers in advance, will pop back in a while...

Clean hands, short nails, vaseline or KY jelly. Do it after she has been fed. Place her either on her left side or on her back with knees bent. Two people makes it easier as one can hold her gently but firmly while the other does the deed.

It is not necessary to push your finger inside - IME once the tip of the suppository goes in the rest tends to follow fairly swiftly. If it pops straight out again, don't panic, leave it a while and try again later.

If you can manage to do it while she is asleep that would be great, but not easy to achieve!

must go to work now - good luck.

it will stay in once it has gone up.. the muscles in her bottom will hold it there (As long as you put it up far enough)..
my son had to have them & i just pulle dhis knees up to his chest..this opens up the ear.. then just pop it in..

Oops, looks like I posted this twice, sorry !!!

Well, I managed to skim your tips before going ahead and doing it. We've been dilating her new bottom for months now so it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was more worried about keeping it in but it seemed to work OK and we had a nice couple of dirty nappies as a result! (she hadn't poo'd all day yesterday and the consultant said she can never go more than 48 hours between poos for the rest of her life!).

Thank you all xx
