Sharp, stitch-like pain, right-hand side. Any suggestions what it could be?

Last night I was woken up by a sharp pain in my side. As bad as a calf cramp, but where a side stitch would be. Mid-way between my ribs and my hips, so right at my waist, on the right-hand side.

Lasted for about 30 minutes, pain was intermittent but fairly severe. I'd say a six or seven out of ten. If it had carried on I'd have been thinking it was an A and E job.

I feel totally fine now, so not sure whether to put it down to one of those things and hope it doesn't come back again! I'm 50, menopausal but otherwise in good health.

Do you still have your appendix ? Location is about right for appendicitis.

Thanks for replying! I do still have my appendix. It crossed my mind in the night when I was worrying about it, but my son had appendicitis and his pain seemed to be much lower in his tummy. This pain seemed to be so localised to this one specific area, which was higher up!

Sounds too high up to be appendix (although could possibly be referred pain.) it could potentially be gallbladder, liver or right kidney. Or it could be a shocking acute instance of trapped wind (one of the most excruciating but benign things.) If it's gone away it might suggest it was indeed wind, or something gastric like that. I'd get it checked out if it returns.
