Has anyone had a duodenal ulcer?

Wondering how they feel? I have had an intermittent stabbing pain and tenderness under my right ribs for over a month. I actually went to urgent care in December thinking I had a kidney stone or something and they referred me for CT scan on my kidneys, which was normal. I've also had an abdominal ultrasound, which was also normal. This pain started while I was taking cefalexin for a uti and has been on and off since. I do have reflux and ibs but haven't been using any meds recently as the PPI's give me awful bloating and diarrhea, which is difficult on top of existing ibs. I'm getting really fed up with this pain now though and just want answers but gp just says that I've had scans and several stool tests and all are normal. I do have some famotidine that I've not tried yet and it's bad today so may well give it a go tonight and see if it helps.

Hi OP, I've had one, caused by h pylori infection. As you have already had a stool test I assume they checked for this bacteria?

Does the pain have any correlation to your eating?

CreatingHavoc · 24/01/2025 21:22

@mismomary yes, negative for h pylori. It seems to be worse when I'm bloated or a bit constipated. Eating does seem to aggrevate it sometimes.

I had gastric ulcers and gastritis diagnosed by endoscopy. The other tests did not show ulcers. An Endoscopy would also show whether you have a hiatus hernia, which is another possible diagnosis. It's quite likely reflex is causing the symptoms but an endoscopy would rule out any other conditions. Could you take low dose PPIs?

For me the pain was so intense I had to lie down in a foetal position to alleviate it. And it was directly linked to eating.

@JaneWolfHall I had a endoscopy a few years ago and I do have a small hernia. However the pain on right side is new. I've never experienced right sided pain previously. It's very stabby as well, whereas my usual reflux pain is more of an ache on the left side. My stomach is very bloated and gurgly today but my left side isn't particularly bad.

I’m sorry to jump on this thread but I’ve been in hospital with my husband and he has the exact same symptoms as you! Ask so after eating or drinking he’s in agony. All scans and bloods normal. Did you ever find out for sure what it was please? X

CreatingHavoc · 20/03/2025 16:56

@Squigglesandgiggles I didn't yet. Famotidine seems to be helping somewhat so could well be acid/ulcer related. I did notice that when I had an alcoholic drink one evening (I rarely drink) the next day it was very bad. So no alcohol for me for the foreseeable.
