Where to get low cost asbestos check for home?

Anyone know of any professional services for checking for asbestos?

That don't cost an arm or a leg. I'm in a rented property so maybe the landlord is the first port of call. I'm hoping I'm just being over anxious.

What specifically is worrying you? How old is the property? Asbestos in domestic properties tends to be low level and really only a risk if disturbed.

You can buy kits online yourself! You post them off and their lab will test them.

We had a so called asbestos specialist come to remove sheets from a garage and also do testing of the artex in our house. He said 'well, if I test too many places, then there is bound to be asbestos!' 😮

Edited to say that this was a derelict property that needed a huge amount of renovations, hence our concerns about disturbing asbestos.

Property built around 1985/86.

There is vibration in walls when upstairs flat puts gas heating on. It's not annoying, but the dust I've noticed it just doesn't remind me of the usual housedust.

Anxious that it's falling all around me then on a daily basis, because of being disturbed. But then vibrations from washing machines, gas boilers etc, shouldn't disturb it should they? I think I'm being over anxious I lost a relative to mesothelioma.

Thanks, I wouldn't know what to do if the test came back positive as it's dust, on surfaces so I will have been exposed. But hoping I'm just being over anxious at the moment.

How much did it cost to have your specialist come out? I think those dappled type ceilings are asbestos aren't they? That's what I've got above me.

I don't know the cost of him JUST testing within the home. He spent 3 days on a derelict garage, meticulously cutting ivy off the asbestos sheets on the roof of it. We had to get an asbestos specific skip, which was about £900, just for the skip.

I was quoted £250 for a survey (where samples are taken from usual locations around home) and £150 for specific testing of suspected material. You should raise with your landlord first though as a survey or test is intrusive so would mean leaving marks/holes (that would need filling in) where samples have been taken. They may have had an asbestos survey already so could put your mind at ease. Either way, let them know your concern and see what they say.
