Can norovirus only last a few hours?

Hi all. DD started complaining her stomach was hurting yesterday lunchtime. Within a couple of hours she was vomiting and this carried on until early hours of today so around 12 hours. She now seems absolutely fine.

I went to work this morning and DH stayed home with DD. Felt fine when I started work but by about midday started feeling stomach cramps and by 4pm had to go home because I felt so ropey. Extremely nauseous, stomach cramps, very cold/shivering. Within a few minutes of getting home I was sick twice and also had diarrhea (TMI, sorry!) but... nothing since? I feel a bit ropey still but nowhere near as bad as before. No more nausea or stomach cramps. My initial thought was norovirus as I know that's doing the rounds, but my previous experience of noro has been hours/days of sickness and then feeling awful for several days afterwards. Feel like a bit of a fraud leaving work as I feel pretty okay now.

Has anyone else had noro that only lasted a few hours? Or could it be something else like food poisoning? DH and DS are fine so far (touch wood!).

Same thing here. Like a 24 hr thing. Really ill in the night, but that was it. Tired the next day but then fine. Thought it couldn’t be noro or food poisoning as every time I’ve had something like that I’ve been ill for days.

It could be. It varies. My friend came to stay and didn't tell us that her DD had been sick (once) the day before. We all came down with awful awful norovirus symptoms. Felt so bad for about 2 weeks and lost half a stone. We were all having to share two toilets and everyone was being violently sick with diarrhoea. It was hellish.

My friend was very sheepish but kept saying that her DD had only been sick once so she didn't think it could be anything infectious! It was definitely noro with how violent it was and how quickly it spread and came on.

It's just a sickness bug, the particular pathogen is largely irrelevant here. Importantly it's likely contagious tho.

Don't feel bad about going home from work. You shouldn't go back til 48hrs clear from d/v.

I had the exact thing last week, stomach cramps really painful at work but managed to get home. Was home for 15 minutes then I threw up 🤮 just once though, did simultaneously go to the toilet too but it wasn’t diarrhoea. Literally felt fine afterwards too but before and during I had the shivers and felt cold and shaky. No idea what caused it but my colleague had a d&v bug the week before so who knows.

Hmmm. Ds was sick in class yesterday, and once again in the car on the way home. Was a bit quiet for an hour then bounced back - ate dinner, fine over night, and is fine today. I have kept him home. I am hoping it isn't noro.

Yes never more than a few hours in this house thankfully! Either just a couple of vomits a few hours apart, or constant vomiting for a couple of hours then it's over. Feel ropey for about 24 hours, but the actual sickness never more than half a night usually.

DD had norovirus - violently ill, sky high temperature etc for about 12 hours, then nothing after that. She was still nauseous, tired and very weak (could barely walk without fainting) for another week after that though.

whereareyousleep · 14/01/2025 16:20

We had the same over new year struck us all down over the course of a week a few hours each then tired the next day. Took out 6 of us over the course of a week like dominoes!

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/01/2025 16:33

Yep. The only time I have ever had noro I was sick once. Took at least another 24-48 hrs to get enough energy back to get the remote to change the tv channel or have a shower though.

WhereverElse2019 · 14/01/2025 16:38

Thanks all, still feel quite ropey today but no more sickness since yesterday. Similar with DH, he was sick a couple of times last night but now seems fine!

I read a study where they deliberately infected people with noro, and of the people who became symptomatic something like a third only vomited once. People think noro is always this horrific thing with hours and hour of exorcist-like vomiting. But it isn't.

Also it doesn't really matter. It's definitely some sort of vomiting bug, and the "treatment" (not that you can treat it but the advice like rest, try not to get too dehydrated etc) is the same regardless, as is the 48 hour rule for school.
