ok, ds has been weeing any which way but down since out of nappies.... he is three.
so i suspected phimosis but everything i read said he would grow out of it and he had a good flow etc so was not worried and i thought i would just mention it to hv next time i saw her. Anyway today he has been in agony with each wee with bulging willy etc. Took him to a and e and they pulled his foreskin back as much as possible (not much at all) advised pain killers and sent us home with the threat of circumcision if no improvement. He is now bouncing around the house busting to pee but to scared to try even in the bath..... a small bit came out in the bath but minmal..... should i go back to a and e..... will he wee eventually if his bladder gets to full???? And erm is pulling his foreskin back something i should have been doing from young anyway??... no one told me to.

Any chance of him getting off to sleep with some calpol? You could put a nappy on him....

tissy · 04/05/2008 22:16

Sounds like he has an infection, tbh. If the foreskin gets a bit swollen, and the hole is already very small, it will get even smaller.

If he remains in agony, take him back to A+E, they could pass a fine tube up to drain the wee off, then he'd be comfortable enough till the morning. This might give the swelling a chance to settle.

fordfiesta · 04/05/2008 22:16

well dosed up with calpol and neurofen so and keeping fingers crossed they will kick in soon and he will sleep..... i feel so sorry for him!

ow ow ow..... not much fun being a boy sometimes! he wont let me near it but is busy thinking about doing it himself at the moment!
if he does not sleep soon will take back to a and e, why does this always happen on a bank holiday?

start to gently retract the foreskin in the bath every night and wiggle a little so that you're clearing out any dirt up there...

very gently, just so water can get to where pee and poo do.

that would be my strong advice. dh has balanitis aged 1, we've been doing that ever since on advice of homeopath and he hasn't had a recurrence nor has he needed a circumcision as predicted by gp.

Loshad · 04/05/2008 22:32

think sounds like an ifection. ds2 has just had a preplutioplasty ( where they make a cut in the foreskin) - he's 12, and had been told to fiddle with it as it was very tight, until one night ( I was out - bloomin useless (doctor!!) DH looking after them) it got stuck back (he was about 9) and Dh said oh go to bed and we'll see in the morning - next morning whole pe**s was swollen like a balloon . After a whole day at GP's /A+E I had to hold him down while they replaced foreskin to it's normal place with much screaming. He was given strict instructions to leave well alone, and has just had regular checks at hospital until now (they like to leave it until they are reasonably old as aftercare is bit painful and involves moving th cut foreskin up and down 2x daily).
It appears to have been successful, if not will have to be circumcision but they prefer to not do that if possible due to excess bleeding etc at his age.

Heathcliffscathy · 04/05/2008 22:33

sorry, my advice was for once this infection clears...it does sound like balantis.

fordfiesta · 04/05/2008 22:35

what is balanitis???? My mum says she routinely used to retract my brothers foreskin (bet he will be chuffed if he new i was discussing it with my mum!?) and that is what they used to be told to do..... no one has evertold me to do it. will do so in future!!! is falling asleep on sofa at the moment so fingers crossed for tonight.

inflammation of the penis as matter gets trapped under tight foreskin. they are very cagey about advising this because foreskins retract naturally over time and pulling back hard can damage them and tear etc. but the point of this is to only do it enough so that water flushes out what can already trap bacteria...gently is the key gentle and wiggle in the bathwater.

backintheUK · 04/05/2008 22:42

My ds who is coming up to 5 recently saw the dr and he gave us some steroid cream to stick on every day and to encourage him to play with it ! ie encourage him to stretch it himself in the bath. we are going back in 2 monhs to see whats going on - but I think try to avoid circumcision for a long time yet as I think there are lots of alternatives before going down that road...
maybe worthwhile seeing GP rather than HV

fordfiesta · 04/05/2008 22:43

ahhh,ok.. thanks everyone.

OP posts:
backintheUK · 04/05/2008 22:50

don't force it though - make sure he is just playing - if it does get stuck 'back' can be excruciatingly painful and quite dangerous

dingdong05 · 04/05/2008 23:04

my ds is 4 now and had a v tight foreskin too. His penis would bulge hugely when he peed, and he's had a few infections (although I have to remind drs of this as they usually say "it prob isn't an infection as boys don't tend to get them
It does sound like an infection, so if he gets through the night I'd take him to the drs in the morning for medicine and then ask for a referal to get it properly checked out. I finally got a doc who said that the infections could cause a bit of scar tissue which would make it difficult for the skin to stretch on its own.
After getting refered to the hosp he was given diprosone to apply to the foreskin for a couple of months to relax the skin, which did the trick, until it tightened up again... he's just had a 2nd treatment but if it keeps tightening up he'll need a snip.
Loshad I was checking my ds's foreskin one day and it stuck back- I was quietly freaking out as I chatted happily with ds (who was a gem through it all!) Thankfully it eventually popped back without a trip to a&e!

fordfiesta · 05/05/2008 14:08

hello again, have been back to a and e and got some anti biotics, they have said to get gp to ref to surgeons with a view to having a partial circumsicion at some point in the future if no improvement.
poor little critter, is refusing to wee until he is so desperate that he wets himself!!! and that upsets him because he has not long been potty trained.

OP posts:
tissy · 05/05/2008 16:27

have you got a dh/ dp around who could help him make peeing fun- having a competition to see who could hit a target or something? If he were allowed to do something he's not usually allowed to- peeing in the garden, perhaps? He might forget about the soreness!

dingdong05 · 05/05/2008 22:42

poor wee man! Anti biotics tend to work pretty quickly though, so fingers crossed he'll be through the worst of it soon.
