Odd. you'd think you would remember the sort of injury that causes broken ribs, never mind the pain that goes with them. I hate to tell you this, but multiple previously undiagnosed rib fractures makes most doctors wonder about an underlying alcohol problem.

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2008 20:56

i think i'm ok on that front. no blacking out in living memory!

i'm wondering if it was when i was a child. will have to ask my parents.

I know what you mean, I was told I had damaged my pelvis quite badly (knew nothing of it)

did you used to drink a lot soph?

oh I see previous poster has asked the same

I thought of it because I did, you see

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2008 20:57

he said they were old breaks.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2008 20:58

fallen down stairs?

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2008 20:58

but broken ribs pain would last for weeks! even if i had got pissed and fallen over (i did do that once in spectacular fashion on my hen-night) surely the subsequent pain would have been noticed by me afterwards?

My sister managed to break at least one rib with horrible coughing - could something liek that have happened to you?

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2008 20:59

i remember my right side ribs being especially painful when i was preg with ds...i put it down to thingywatsit rib flare thing.

Have you done any sports? My DH was diagonsed with fractured ribs recently, no recollections of doing it, but plays footie regularly.

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2008 21:02

oh gosh don't want to hijack but can you tell me about that please? I have big rib pain at front sometimes, feels like baby is going to burst out and break a rib while its doing it

anyway
are you sure this doctor is correct? could there be a mistake?

FrannyandZooey · 03/05/2008 21:03

I am wondering if as a child something like falling from a tree, then very fast healing young bones, perhaps you and parents thought you had just bruised and bashed yourself?

but I don't know if this is medically feasible

PinkTulips · 03/05/2008 21:04

i've apparently broken my nose at some point... nobodies sure when though.

when i did break a few ribs it wasn't as sore as you'd imagine a break to be. was only really painful about twice over the space of a few weeks (although i did self medicate rather heavily ) and the rest of the time i hardly noticed it unless i laughed too hard. oddly enough, they hurt far mkore during my pregnancies which were 2 and 4 years after the injury!

i'd guess it happened when you were a kid and as there wasn't much of a mark and you didn't complain much your mother didn't think much of it. mine barely bruised at all, had to point the marks out to people

Pheebe · 03/05/2008 21:18

apparently it can happen while you're pregnant , any chance that could be an explanation for you?

beanaz · 03/05/2008 21:22

funnily enough, i went to the GP during and as far as 5 months after my pregnancy about rib pain, asked if it was possible they were broken, only to be told "you'd KNOW if you'd broken your ribs, believe me".... clearly not!

Heathcliffscathy · 03/05/2008 22:58

rib flare thingumy is when ribs get pushed wide in mid to late stages of pregnancy. it is like stitch with massive bells on.

was horrendous.

dh thinks i did it when i fell somersaultingly backwards on hen night.

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 03/05/2008 23:12

could it be falling from bike in tree as child?

As you know I have broken two and they hurt like fuck
but you can pop one just coughing and it be not too painful I believe

beanaz · 03/05/2008 23:51

can you break a rib by having pressure applied over a long period of time? i had what i assumed was a foot poking me in the rib for months- later found out it was a clot hidden behind the placenta, but thats another story.. anyway, point is, i still get pain there. do you think it could have been broken? if not, any ideas on what it is? oh, dd's now 10 months old btw, obviously not just a post-pregnancy niggle but my doc is cr-poo!
