Anyone taken Prednisolone

3 weeks ago I have finished a 10 week course of Prednisolone. I was lucky enough to get lots of side effects like the wonderful swelling and am now a stone heavier with a round puffy face, hands, back, ankles etc and wondered if anyone else had had this and how long it takes to sort itself out. I am now getting really fed up about it all

dh is long term prednisolone. so no idea on how long effects take to go down.

he was quite 'moony' in the face to start with but it has slowly reduced.

I took Prednisolone for weeks in late pg and after the birth of no2. I didn't think I was moon-faced at the time but looking at the photos now I definitely was!

Judging by the photos I looked normal again within a couple of months of coming off it.

sorry i just came in to read this thread, my dogs on prednisolone.
she has an itching condition is it the same in humans?

BlaDeBla · 30/04/2008 22:20

It's a magic drug, but the side effects are awful. The side effects should subside with time. I am back on anti-depressants because it kick started a period of gloom for me. It may be worth having a word with your gp about it.

I was on it for the first 10 weeks of both my pregnancies (to prevent miscarriage) and I had some of that...took about a month, I think, for the 'moon face' look to go!

I'm very grateful for the stuff, wouldn't have my dds without it probably...but yes it does have nasty side effects used long-term. They really do go away again though, hang in there

TooTicky · 30/04/2008 22:33

Ds2 currently having it in his eye following op.

I am on it alot of the time for severe asthma and I find it does make me bloat a bit, not to mention the hyper moods...

However the longer I'm on it the less I usually notice the effects - and have overall ended up no heavier (any weight always drops off when I have a break)

I think the side effects are different/ more pronounced in some people than others IYKWIM, but I also think that if you give it a few weeks and eat sensibly and exercise, you will go back to normal. Good luck x

I've been on it for fairly long stretches in the past (up to a year). Definitely caused the swelling and weight gain. Swelling goes pretty quickly (I'd say approx one month), weight gain is another story! But then I can't say I've done much to help that! But if you were only on it for 10 weeks I'm guessing the weight gain aspect won't have been quite so bad as my 4 stone as a result of it!

wilbur · 01/05/2008 10:47

I was on it when I was 12/13 for almost a year. It took several months for the moon face to go down completely (but then I was on a v high dose for a while, the photos are quite scary from that time) and the water retention to stop. It did go though, even the weight that had come on as a result of the massive increase in appetite. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks everyone, it is just getting me down being back in clothes I wore in the weeks after my two pregnacies. I have put on a stone to add to the stone I am generally overweight!! My weight really gets me down so this is just adding to it
