Adult high temperature. I'm so tearful

Elderberrybabe · 10/12/2024 17:49

I'm 44 y/o and single mum to 2 boys (8 and 13). Yesterday I became ill with a sudden tickling cough, temperature of 39, headache and really painful skin.
I've struggled to move all day as I'm just aching all over. I had to get my 8y/o dad to do school run as I just couldn't manage it.
I'm so cold. My heating is on and I'm wrapped up (I do know I shouldn't but it's so painful to be cold). I'm taking regular paracetamol and ibuprofen but my temperature has gone up to 39.8. I feel so pathetic and scared. I just want my mum who is in the hospital following a knee replacement.
I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I'm covid negative and not sure what to do for the best.

Early night and lots of fluids. I hope you feel better soon. Keep alternating the paracetamol and ibuprofen. Can the 13 yo help out with the younger one for you?

Cattyisbatty · 10/12/2024 17:54

I've had the high temperature and cough this week as well. Started on Sat and definitely getting better today, although I sound very croaky.
Paracetemol brought down the temp for me though, definitely keep up with the drugs, loads of fluids, rest. It

Scottishskifun · 10/12/2024 17:55

When did you take paracetamol and ibuprofen? If your temp is not coming down at all (usually about an hour after taking) and your symptoms are getting worse then it might be worth a 111 call.
If it is coming down and your still terrible tomorrow or symptoms worse then call your GP.

Ibuprofen for some people works better on a fever try to avoid both wearing off at the same time (hence the alternating) and lots of fluids.

Sprig1 · 10/12/2024 17:55

Keep drinking and rest as much as you can. I have something similar. I was feeling like death warmed up last night but I am feeling quite a lot better today (but still not excellent). Hopefully you will improve quickly too.

HPandthelastwish · 10/12/2024 17:55

I'd be asking dad's to step up and take them for a few days, pack them both a bag until you are better. If it becomes proper flu you'll be no good to man not beast for a few days / weeks. Or it might be a cold that passes tonight.

Elderberrybabe · 10/12/2024 17:55

Both my boys are ASD and my 13y/o has also been struggling with a stubborn temperature and viral symptoms.

I'm feeling really alone and tearful.

This jumps out at me:

"I feel so pathetic and scared. I just want my mum"

You're not pathetic (single parent to ASD kids, you're amazing) but you may be quite unwell.

Call out of hours and get medical advice. Hope you feel better soon.

Elderberrybabe · 10/12/2024 17:59

Thanks everyone. This is why I appreciate mn x
The dad is working tonight so he can't do much. I was surprised when he offered to do school pick up.
I took paracetamol at 5:30 so I'll take ibuprofen at 7:30.

Poor you. There’s a lot of flu around this year, it’s up by 300% or something. You can get a flu lateral flow test for Influenza A/B from Amazon. I had it a few weeks ago and it’s the most ill I’ve been as an adult. Much worse than any covid I’ve had.

I hope you feel better soon.

Elderberrybabe · 10/12/2024 18:01

Thank you @AutismTimesTwo. Thankfully my youngest is entertaining himself with ASMR videos x

That's good at least, hope that hyperfocus is long lasting!
I do get it though, it's really tough being ill in an ND house.

Ah it sounds like a nasty bug you’ve both got. Really hope you feel better in the morning. Can you sleep all day tomorrow while the kids are at school?

jessycake · 10/12/2024 19:51

Sounds like flu , you are not pathetic ,it is probably the worst you have ever felt and you will be unable to do much if anything .The worst will be over in a couple of days although sometimes it takes a while to feel properly better .

Elderberrybabe · 10/12/2024 21:23

@Iwishiwasagiraffe yes, I'll try to rest all day tomorrow. I always feel guilty for neglecting the house work.

@jessycake I definitely feel the worst I've ever felt. My joints hurt and my headache is the worst.

How are you now OP.

woffley · 13/12/2024 17:11

There's a lot of old fashioned flu about. If you've never had it you might think it's like a bad cold but it's much worse. Can affect people of all ages badly.
Nothing to do but drink plenty, stay warm and take paracetamol.

Elderberrybabe · 13/12/2024 23:14

@whatisforteamum I'm feeling much better thank you. Just feels like a bad cold now with some dizziness at times. Trying to pace myself because I'm finding that I'm getting tired very quickly x

Lots of this going around OP, I was ill with it for weeks and lots of friends, colleagues from across the country have similar symptoms too. Get lots of rest, take the meds and plenty of fluids.
