Cold and chest virus - health anxiety

I've had this horrible cold/flu for three weeks, blocked/runny nose and cough, chesty, mucous....
I went to my GP today thinking it might be a chest infection, it isn't but she said since it's been three weeks of having a cough she should refer me for a chest x-ray. She said she isn't going to at this point as my chest sounded clear and she thinks it's viral.
She said if it doesn't go away in a couple of weeks I can go for an x-ray. I asked what the x-ray was to check for and she said lung cancer.
She was very clear that she doesn't think I have lung cancer.
But that was pretty much all I heard and now my health anxiety is sky high and I'm struggling to deal with keeping my head above water and not panicking.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Take comfort from the fact that there are lots of cold and flu viruses around at this time of year. And the ‘after - symptoms’ can linger for quite a while. I can’t give you specific advice because I don’t know your personal circumstances. However, the positive spin on this is that a chest x-ray is probably the next step in the protocol for lingering respiratory symptoms - an exclusionary investigation, if you like. I’ve had infections like this that have lasted for months. I always have a word with my local pharmacist who is pretty good on the advice front! Hope you get well soon!💐

I have health anxiety also so I know how you feel. Try to use evidence against the intrusive thoughts "does lung cancer cause a blocked/runny nose?" If you can accept that the answer is no then ask yourself what is more likely. Concrete facts/evidence is usually what soothes my anxiety, uncertainty kills me.
