check hair every week - wash then put on lots of conditioner and comb through from root to tip,looking at comb on light surface each stroke, clean comb between each one too. Then use something like Nitty Gritty Spray or Biz Niz conditioner as a preventative

The scary looking metal combs are the best for getting them out. If you do a weekly comb through with tea-tree conditioner, you might get away with it.
