Complex ovarian cyst - blood test - 2 week urgent referral

Hello,

I'm just looking for a bit of a handhold and reassurance from anyone who's been through something similar.

A week ago I (28) had a transvaginal ultrasound to locate my mirena IUD - I'd gone to the GP to have it removed but she couldn't find the strings, so I was referred for this scan. I'd wanted the IUD out because I've been experiencing increasingly painful and frequent cramping (especially on one side) since having it in, and I was worried it wasn't agreeing with me or was in the wrong place, so I wanted to switch to the mini pill. The pain can be really bad and I've been taking ibuprofen most days to cope. I have a history of heavy and painful periods, and while the IUD helped with the bleeding the cramping has been really bad.

My u/s results show the IUD is where it's supposed to be but they found a "complex ovarian cyst" measuring 7x4cm on my right ovary which they want to urgently investigate. I've been referred on the 2 week urgent pathway to gynaecology for more scans and I've had to arrange a CA125 blood test for my ovaries through my GP. I'm just in so much shock and so scared. I'm 28 and I haven't had children yet, but I desperately want to. DH and I were holding off trying for another 6 months to a year or so due to jobs and building up savings but I've been broody for ages and now I'm terrified I've either got something really scary or my fertility is going to be affected. Any handholding or reassurance/stories of similar experiences would be really welcome, thank you.

I had this, it was a very similar story. They gave me an MRI and that showed the cyst had shrunk and didn't look cancerous so they will re scan in a few months to assess it's size again.

I had something very similar - a 10cm complex cyst found on my right ovary during a scan for something else. I was put on the urgent pathway and had the blood test also. Bloods were ok and the cyst was diagnosed as a benign complex mucinous cystadenoma. It was described as complex because it had some chambers within it.

Although it was benign, they wanted to remove it because of its size (and the fact that this particular type of cyst won't go away on its own) so a few months later I had it taken out as a day surgery op. It was keyhole surgery, and the recovery was fine.

The ovary recovered fine and my usual periods/cycle resumed a few months later.

I hope that is reassuring in some way!

I also had this many years ago it turned out to be a dermoid cyst (benign) - I was having a scan for kidney stones when they found it. I actually had one on each ovary and had them both removed. I fell pregnant with my DD after that with no trouble at all. Edit to say I was 27 at the time.

Similar here. Just had my bloods back and there are no tumor markers so it'll be rescanned in a few months.
Good luck for your bloods
