I attended a&e on Sunday with shortness of breath and chest pain following advice from an out of hours doctor- A&E thought it was an asthma attack so treated with nebulisers and oxygen but this didn’t really help with the breathlessness. They did a load of bloods and swabs and the junior doctor told me I’d tested positive for influenza but the clot markers in my blood results were also slightly elevated so he was going to send me for a scan and give anticoagulants.
The consultant then came in and said all this was unnecessary and that the levels were only elevated because I had the flu which has set off my asthma and I should go home and just rest. The junior doctor was lovely and actually apologised when discharging me but the consultant essentially scolded me for coming in with the flu (I didn’t know I had the flu- I’d done a Covid test that morning which was negative) and said I was just being overly anxious and that “obviously people feel unwell with the flu”
I’m back home now but can’t shake the thought that somethings been missed as they were super busy. I’ve had exacerbations of my asthma before but it’s always responded quickly to nebulisers and steroids which aren’t working now. Part of me thinks I should get a second opinion but I don’t fancy being told off by another doctor for making a fuss and being made to feel like I’m overly dramatic and wasting peoples time so I’m not sure what to do for the best
