WTF is going on with my eyes?

Having weird visual disturbance this morning. It's like when you look at a bright light and get dazzled - except instead of going back to normal, vision has been weird for about 10 mins. It's almost like there are "gaps" - eg I can't see the screen properly.

I am 36 wks pg and know that this can be a sign of pre-eclampsia - but then I have no other symptoms (swelling, pain anywhere etc)

Anyone had any experience of this?

TIA

You should see your midwife or GP, I do believe visual problems can be a sign of pre eclampsia.

Another possibility is that it is an optic migraine. I get these, especially when I'm tired. They are strange because they are painless.

You need to get yourself probably checked out though.

It sounds like visual disturbance migrane. I got lots of these when I was pregant not sure about pre- eclampsia. I was working in opticians at the time so I was reassured quite quickly hth and someone with more knowledge will come along

Tiggiwinkle · 28/04/2008 10:56

It does sound like a migraine, but since you are pregnant and do not usually get them you should see your midwife urgently to rule out pre-ecampsia. It can come on suddenly in late pregnancy.

Ring NHS direct or call your midwife - NOW!!! Might be something and nothing, or something they can nip in the bud. Don't wait.

I would get it checked by midwife or GP. Take a sample of urine with you they can then check to see if you have protein in your urine. (this is another sign of preeclampsia).

Bugger, I know you are all right! I will need to get checked. It seems to be lessening off now and I still don't have any other symptoms - no headache or anything.

Interesting about the migraine thing - I used to get a lot of these and it's not the same sort of disturbance. Also I've never had a painless one - had not heard of an "optic" migraine.

Thanks for replies.

Let us know how you get on.

WingsofanAngel · 28/04/2008 11:22

Hope all goes well. Take it from someone who had preeclampsia it's best to get it checked out.

lilolilmanchester · 28/04/2008 11:32

Quick nag Doggie, have you spoken to anyone yet?

chipmonkey · 28/04/2008 11:33

Doggie, it sounds like visual migraine but in pg you can't take any chances in case it is pre-eclampsia. Did you get it checked out?

doggiesayswoof · 28/04/2008 20:09

Update - I got a GP appt this afternoon and he's signed me off (was due to go on mat leave at end of next week, now I guess I have finished...)

Not pre-eclampsia thank goodness. apparently I have had a threatened vasovagal episode - aka fainting - which means I had a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate. Vision going weird is apparently one of the signs.

No explanation , but if it happens again I've to have an MRI scan. He scared me actually, talking about stroke and TIAs etc (although did say that I was low risk for these things).

Glad you saw the GP. Look after yourself.

chipmonkey · 29/04/2008 01:16

Probably just as well you've been signed off. Gives you a chance to put your feet up!

lilolilmanchester · 29/04/2008 16:34

take it easy! Good luck and will watch out for the birth announcement!

belgo · 29/04/2008 16:37

Doggie - glad you've got some time off. I'm surprised your doctor talked about TIAs , strokes and MRI scans - many pregnant women faint without there being a serious problem.

I'm surprised he didn't mention a visual disturbance migraine - what you had sounds very much like one. I find they are brought on by bright lights and tiredness.

Anyway, tkae this time to rest and prepare for your baby
