She says it is worse when she gets up or when she has been sitting around. She says that taking paracetemol and neurofen together aren;t helping because the pain isnt constant. She says it aches and then sometimes she gets a jolting pain in her back and leg. She hasn't done anything to her hip, that she can remember. Im taking her to the doctors tomorrow but im quite worried

Sciatica?

One or more of the following sciatica symptoms are typically experienced:

Pain in the rear or leg that is worse when sitting

Burning or tingling down the leg

Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot

A constant pain on one side of the rear

A shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up

I googled.

Does she wear extremely flat 'ballet ' style shoes? They can cause hip pain.

The doc should point her in the direction of xrays, and a specialist if it's this bad.

I had an on/off dull aching pain in my hip for a few months (I'm 26) and went to my GP for it, worried that it might be something awful, and she sent me for xrays and to a traumatologist. My problem is something like incipient arthritis, which may get worse and in 20o years or so I may need an operation or something.

Tell the doc all the symptoms, and keep on at them if you don't get anywhere.

Has she had a cold or viral infection recently?

DS2 has now twice had some weird thing in his hip following a virus. The first time he couldn't stand up (that was after a very mild cold), the second time it didn't hurt as much.

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2008 22:39

I thought sciatica actually, as i do get this very occasionally, it bloody hurts!!

maidamess, yes you are right about the shoes, although she has just bought a pair with wedge heels - maybe the change in shoes has brought this on.

She has had it on and off for a few weeks now (only told me about it on friday, she lives with her BF)

We went to the doctors and the dx was groin strain !!! My daughter said to me, "well, that was the most humiliating visit to the doctors ive had so far" then she said, "i wouldnt mind, but ive not had sex for two months" . There are some things i wish she wasnt so open about
