Terrified of sumatriptan

I'm on day 5 of an awful head and the doctor has prescribed this today. Initially gave me 100mg but I freaked out and have bought the otc 50mg.

The side effects terrify me. I have awful medication anxiety.

Side effects similar to a heart attack: jaw/chest/throat tightness.

Rationally I know I need this because even naproxen isn't helping but I'm literally so scared and I just know that I'll be the one in whatever who will experience them all. I'm also nervous about driving the school run tomorrow feeling spaced out etc.

Can anyone share their experiences please?

Is it worth still taking even though not as severe as earlier? I know it could get worse again though.

Like others, I take Topiramate as a preventative
But imigran nasal spray on the odd occasion I do still get a migraine. I have no side effects with the nasal spray. Just blessed relief from the migraine PDQ, thank god.

I've never developed side effects from Triptan. I fortunately don't have to take it often. They have to log all side effects so maybe people who do get these side effects also have anxiety? I used to have anxiety in my teens and it felt like my chest was tightening.

Does doctors think it's migraine then?
Can you describe the pain?
A lot of people find 1000mg dispersible aspirin as effective as triptans.

Yes I saw doctor today. Had bp checked, checked back of eyes, ears and throat too.

I have a history of migraines with aura, last one about 3 years ago.

This one I've not had an aura. It's like my head is in a vice. Forehead, temples, back of head, neck. Like it's being squeezed full force.

Should add. It was awful on Wednesday, dissipated, built up again over the weekend causing two sleepless nights, and then eye watering this morning.

So the sumatriptan will probably make you feel better than that, at the very least. Why suffer unnecessarily?

SummerHouse · 04/11/2024 19:28

Get it down you op. I will be here with you. You are suffering. If you don't take it now you will be in this position again. Imagine taking it, it working. and you have no side effects. You will be proud of yourself and will have it in your armoury if you need it in future. My DS is 13 and uses the nasal spray. He is very sensitive and feels EVERYTHING 10 times over. He has no side effects. This is a battle between you and health anxiety and by god you have got this. Please don't continue suffering.

Because it's not as awful as earlier. Still a bad headache but not as awful. I'm not sure if it's worth taking therefore.

Hands at the ready for holding. Virtual blanket and a cup of tea waiting.

DropOfffArtiste · 04/11/2024 19:31

Take the tablet and go to bed. Imagine the relief when the pain has lifted.

I hate taking medications but got my first prescription for sumatriptan last month. I have found it to be extremely effective. I actually took it for the third time today as I woke up with a corker of a migraine. I feel a bit spaced out and nauseous after taking it but it is not clear whether that is a side effect of the drug or migraine post-drome.

The head in a vice is good description. I used to say it was like wearing a cement helmet and no matter what pillows I had I was like lying with my head on the pavement.
If you are still having pain, take on and see how you feel. I only take 50mg, but have had migraines so bad I ended up takin a second about 10 hours later as the pain came back.
Now I have Candesartan twice a day for prevention and they work really well for me.
