Tell me about Molluscum...

7yo ds has just been diagnosed with Molluscum. Mostly on his Chim, but some on one eyelid and one shoulder.

What do I need to know?

The GP says it's fine to continue bathing all my LOs together (the youngest is 18m), but everything I read - including the bumpf she gave me - says not to.

Interesting organ, the Chim. Most people know it as the 'chin', of course.

My DD1 had molluscum when she was small (about 2-3 I think.)

A few of the spots got infected, but on the whole we left them alone and they cleared up within a year or so. She has 2 small pitted scars where she had 2 giant ones on her side.

We were told they are contagious but we could still send her to nursery as hers were covered by clothing. The virus is contained within the goo inside the bump, so if they are closed and dry the cross-infection risk is low I believe.

We bought Zymaderm from the US for molluscum for DS1 and DS2. DS3 now has it and we have had it in our house for a year now. All DSs have shared baths for ages so I guess this is how it's passed from one to the other.

DoubleBluff · 25/04/2008 21:14

I used hemp seed cream on DS2 and changed towels after every bath.

yogabird · 25/04/2008 21:17

yep, had it here, it lasts for ages and it seems that you can do nothing to make it go away. sorry not to be able to offer more help but... while I'm on the topic, dd2 has had a huge verruca on her foot for a couple of months at least and i was browsing a homeopathic handbook, found a remedy and only 4 tablets later the bloody thing is nearly gone! amazing - so my thought is maybe homeopathy?

SoMuchToBits · 25/04/2008 21:19

Ds (aged 7) also has it. The GP said, basically there is no real treatment for it, and eventually (but may take several months) it will clear up of its own accord. Ds has it on chin, and a bit around armpits.

PrettyCandles · 25/04/2008 21:22

Did the Zymaderm work on your ds1 and ds2?

I would give homeopathy a try. My DD2 had it for about 18 months and was getting quite bad, went to a homeopath and she took 3 small tablets and 3 weeks later it had all cleared. BTW my DDs shared baths throughout and DD1 never 'caught' it, though maybe her immune system was stronger being the eldest. Homeopath also worked wonders for a wart DD1 had - disappeared in 2 weeks. GP had told us she would just had to live with it and could spread etc.

PrettyCandles · 25/04/2008 21:31

Wow Yogabird! What did you use?

it began with 'Th' hang on... levers self up from sofa and shuffles off to get the little bottle. Have now picked up the knocked over wine glass and refilled and am back. Thuja is the remedy but i would counsel getting advice rather than just experimenting, my book does say it's powerful. The whole homeopathy thing, I'm just scratching the surface of but i can say ththa each time i've used it it has worked, conjunctivitis was spectacularly successful

claricebean · 25/04/2008 21:59

We've had it here too. Lasted about a year in oldest 3 DC. It got 'handed down' from the eldest in baths I guess. We tried some things but nothing seemed to work so in the end just left them and they went away...eventually. About the only positive thing is that once your body has them and rids itself of them, you're immune. I think...god, I hope so. Oh, and also that as an adult you're very unlikely to get them.

bramblebooks · 25/04/2008 21:59

I've been using colloidal silver for ds2's molluscum and I'm convinced that it's made it die down somewhat.

PrettyCandles · 26/04/2008 20:34

Thuja for the verruca - but that's interesting because thuja is a molluscum remedy!

I may give homeopathy a whirl (consultation, not self-prescribed) because I want to minimze the risk of scaring on his face. But in general it sounds like we'll just ahve to live with it. I'm really not sure whether I ought to increase the others' exposure to it through baths...challenge the immune system and acquire immunity -V- risk of scaring and that they might not have as light a case as he does?

My ds's had it and GP sadi leave it alone it'll be gone in 9 months and it was!!Ds1 go it first, then ds2 about a month later. I thought it must have been transferred in the bath.

marmon · 27/04/2008 18:32

My dd had molluscum really bad when she was 4. It was all over her torso on her face and feet, i used thuja tincture and it worked wonders. i used to bathe them twice a day with cotton wool and really fussy with towels etc. All i can say is that they vanished as quickly as they appeared, very odd things.

Seona1973 · 27/04/2008 20:02

I tried both zymaderm and colloidal silver for dd's (4) but she still has them so I have decided to let them run their course now

PrettyCandles · 29/04/2008 21:50

All ds's facial ones have disappeared overnight! Except for the single one that was scabbed over.

molluscum are pearly beads of hell

PrettyCandles · 29/04/2008 22:06

No, I didn't. But it's in the nature of Molluscum for the rash to come and go. He's still got one on his shoulder, so I imagine that's where the next outbreak will be.

dd2 had molluscum on her inner thighs and where they contacted each other kept spreading. I was advised to pinch them off, which worked a treat. I got some anaesthetic cream and numbed the skin first then wearing gloves I pinched each on off at the base. some bled a tiny bit but i pressed on the area for a minute and it stopped. i cleared the lot in a week!
