Pelvic ultrasound

Hi I've got a pelvic ultrasound next week, periods been heavier than usual last few years and a bit of discomfort so getting it looked into.

I've to drink 1 litre of water an hour before and I think this is worrying me more than the result! Worried I'll wet myself in the hospital.

I've read that some people practice with the water beforehand so I'm going to do that and see how I get on with that. The hospital isn't far away luckily. But just worried about holding it in.

I've also read about the internal test they might do and that people are told they can empty their bladder before hand or some people "partially" empty it which is not something I realised you can do! So now I'm wondering if everyone else can do this and I can't? I can cut it off briefly but couldn't stop it properly once it's started.

Maybe I'm overthinking this. Anyway any advice or words of encouragement are appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I've had a couple the last being last week. I usually drink about half a pint an hour before then take more water with me and turn up early and drink the rest there. I then had the external ultrasound doesn't take that long at all and then you can go to the toilet and go back in for the internal scan. It usually all done with in I'd say 10/15 minutes.

I hear you. I had one a few weeks ago. Had to empty my bladder as I knew there was no way I would make it. Turns out my body was still processing and there was enough in the bladder for a successful ultrasound.

A good trick is to drink as much of the water as you can last minute.

Don't sweat it, they'll still be able to proceed.

Agree with the above. I drank loads before setting off from home and then had a very uncomfortable wait as they weren't running to time. They let me go to the loo as soon as they did the scan before he rest of the examination.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take some water with me as well. First time I've had to do this kind of thing. I've also had a couple of accidents, once as a teenager trying to get home from school exams in time and another only a few years ago when I had to run to catch a flight when I wasn't paying attention to the time. Hopefully they're running to schedule!

Hi just to update on this, it went fine, I managed to drink the water in the time frame and was only feeling slightly uncomfortable when I arrived at the hospital, fortunately they took me a bit earlier so that was good.

So I've got a number of fibroids, the Dr could see them clearly so I didn't need the internal procedure. I've to discuss things with my GP, I guess I'll need to do some reading. Biggest one is about 3 cm. So will see what options there are for treatment.
