DS HAD TONSILS OUT TODAY!!!

Ds had his tonsils and adenoids out today and im a mess! He went down at 2pm and came back from surgery at 3pm. He had blood dripping from his nose and kept retching on blood from his throat! He was dosed up on morphine and although asleep he kept screaming and shouting stuff and seemed delerious! I hated seeing him like this. By 5.30 the other 2 children who had gone down after him were sat up in bed and eating mash potatoe but ds was still out of it! Nurse came and tried to take temperature but he really freaked out and she said he had a high temp! When she tried to administer calpol he refused and had to have a suppository. I was in tears and had to leave him with his daddy.

dh has just rang and said ds still hasnt eaten or drank but is sat up and abit more alert. They have given him another suppository and have rigged him up to a drip for the night!

Im home with dsd and feeling guilty cos im nopt with him. Am i a bad mummy for not staying with him?

My ds has hearing problems as a result of his tonsil & adenoid probs too.
I know that I should really get this op done, especially now he is at school, but it is so scary!

It is scary, Blueteddy. I was exactly the same as you when DD1 was waiting to go in. However, having seen the difference in her, I cannot wait for DD2 to go in for hers - it's made easier for me as she's having the same Consultant do the operation, who is really lovely and reassuring (and fit!!).

DD2 started school in September and it is starting to having an effect on school-life - she doesn't hear her teacher very well (although teacher knows this and makes sure that DD2 understands things), she's very tired due to her sleep apnoea, and she eats very little due to the TINY gap in her mouth (Consultant was surprised she manages to eat anything at all!).

When is your DS due for his op?

blueteddy · 08/01/2005 19:40

He is due to go in on the 18th of this month at 7.30am.
I know it will be for the best & if I put it off he will more than likely have another attack.
Last year he was vomiting for 7 days & I put it down to a nasty bug.
I took him to the gp & it turned out that it was all due to his tonsils.

Slinky · 08/01/2005 19:46

Awww, I'll be thinking of you then as I'll be driving DD2 over to the Audiologist at that time on the 18th.

Slinky, your dd2 sounds just like my ds1. The consultant said he had a gap about as big as the tip of your little finger to swallow through.

When we came home from the hospital (he had grommits done at the same time) he called me upstairs because he could hear a strange noise. It was the rain on his bedroom window - he was 3 1/2 and he hadn't heard it before!

blueteddy · 08/01/2005 19:50

My ds's tonsils look all pitted & almost scared from all the tonsilitas that he has suffered over the last couple of years.
I had to really push for the gp to refer him to a specialist though.

Slinky · 08/01/2005 20:19

Aww Potty - that's so sweet, opens up a new little world for them, doesn't it?

Blueteddy
DD1 had one bout of tonsillitus and DD2 has NEVER had tonsillitus - in fact DS1 is the one whose had several doses but ENT are not interested in taking them out. However, his are not as big as DDs, he doesn't snore, suffer sleep apneoa and has no problems with his hearing.

After they removed DD1s, everyone in the operating room were horrified as the back of the tonsils (where you can't see from the mouth) were severely infected.
