Contraceptive pill for anxiety

I experienced a traumatic event/ near death experience in December. For a few months I was a total mess, scared of everything incase I died, didn’t even want to sleep without someone watching me. I have really came on so much since then and am so proud of myself, I was taking propranolol as and when I needed however I have managed to push though and haven’t had any in months. The only thing is, the week before my period begins I don’t seem to be able to control my anxiety anymore? It heightens so so much. I wonder if going back on the contraceptive pill would maybe help balance things in terms of hormones? Just thinking out loud here really.. or maybe some vitamins? Any advice welcome.

I’ve always found my anxiety gets worse in the contraceptive pill, Same for my daughters so I would be wary.

Yes but only if you go back to back. (3m at a time)

Can I ask how old you are?
Only because the pre period anxiety has been much worse for me since hitting peri menopause age!
I’ve found a combination of supplements (Ashwaganda, magnesium and collagen) seem to be helping, I notice the difference if I miss a few days in a row.
My friend of the same age takes a hormone balance one from Holland and Barrett and says it helps her!

@Scutterbug thank you. It’s been a while since I have taken the contraceptive pill so can’t quite remember. @LivelyGoldOrca I did think that would be the case … @FrogJump123 I’m in my 20s so not sure that it would be related to that, I will have a look at the supplements you have mentioned though - thanks very much. Do you take them throughout the month?

I don't think a professional would recommend this to treat as I'm told anxiety is worse with the pill and it may put you in the pre period state constantly? I've always taken mine back to back (tricycle) and doctors said it worsened my anxiety.

I'd look at propranolol just for that week or Cbd oil etc.

Friedseasalt · 10/10/2024 22:24

@MoreCardassianThanKardashian thank you, I do still have plenty propranolol so it’s maybe something to try.

Taking it full stop worsens anxiety whether you tricycle it or not.

HobnobsChoice · 10/10/2024 22:45

Anxiety got much worse for me on the pill in my 20s. In the end I stopped it and got an iud. I now get furious the week before my period but I'm also 44 with two kids and stressful job so th e wek before it comes crashing down me and everything makes me feel like Bruce Banner on the verge of Hulk-ing out.

Lighttodark · 10/10/2024 22:45

Could you think of other ways to manage anxiety eg breathwork, yoga, meditation

fashionqueen0123 · 10/10/2024 22:47

The pill never made me anxious and it was nice not having periods. You can always come off it.

Yes take them every day!
if you not in Peri I don’t know if they will help but I’m sure there will be advice online somewhere, shame there is not more investment in women’s health as I imagine there is a solution but not enough research into it yet. I hope you find the answers you need x
