Skin tag turned black overnight

I noticed a small skin tag a couple of weeks ago and had noticed it had become 'stalk like' yesterday and looked a bit red.

This morning, it's black.
Not hurting and not itchy.

Is this normal? Should I book a GP appointment?

If it helps, my dog's did this the day before it fell off!

JustLaura · 09/10/2024 18:20

Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks

My dogs also did that before it fell off. Assume the blood supply to it has stopped and it’ll drop off

WeeOrcadian · 09/10/2024 18:52

Give it a couple of days, book a GP appt if it hasn't dropped off

JLT24 · 09/10/2024 18:53

Yes it usually means the blood supply to it has died off so it should fall off in the next few days.

Mad1988 · 09/10/2024 18:54

Did you mess with it?

Thanks @JLT24 so basically nothing to worry about currently? I think I'm getting overly concerned as I had a problematic mole once.

Thanks @Mad1988 Not as such but it got caught on a necklace (hadn't noticed it prior. Then it turned black today)

As long as it’s definitely a skin tag then no they are not harmful. If you have any doubts or it doesn’t fall off in a few days of course contact your GP.

I’ve got a little device that fits a tiny elastic band over them to make them drop off. They always go black just before this happens. It’s when the blood supply has been cut off. Sounds like you might have accidentally done this catching it on the necklace. I’d put money on it falling off tomorrow!
