Hi. My 21 month old is just recovering from acute mastoiditis, and I was wondering if there is anyone else out there whose child has been through this? A lot of the information I can find about this infection talks about the need for an operation to drain pus from the bone (because it has a honeycomb structure) to avoid re-infection, or at least scans to check the situation, and the ENT consultant originally spoke about these shortly after she was admitted to hospital. But then we were discharged without seeing him again, and without any operation or scan, because she was responding well to antibiotics. Not that I want her to have any scans or operations unless they are completely necessary, of course! We do have an appointment to go back in a week to see him to follow this up, and also to plan an elective operation to insert grommets (for glue ear) and remove her tonsils and adenoids (which are apparently huge), and of course we are watching her very closely for signs of the lump coming up again or her seeming poorly. Does anyone else have experience of a child of this sort of age having grommets inserted and tonsils / adenoids removed? People keep telling me it's quite young? Thanks! (You just feel a bit lost when things like this happen, don't you?)
