Any opticians out there? I have questions about reading and short sightedness...

Not sure whether this counts as health, or development, or education but...

dd (aged 8) has been an avid reader since she was 3.5. She reads and reads and reads. She is also short sighted?now -3.5 in one eye and -2.5 in the other?this is clearly genetic as both dh and myself are short sighted but for both of us it only became a problem when we were over 10.

I wondered if all the reading and the short sightedness could be linked.

I noticed that a couple of her friends who were also early readers initially had problems with small print and have read that very young children are naturally long sighted ? so I wondered if she was already slightly short sighted as a 3/4 year old and whether this was why she found it so easy to read small print.

But also I have wondered whether it is the other way round ? whether she is short sighted already because she reads so much ? and if the reading was causing the short sightedness, whether there was anything I could do to slow it down.

Would it help to persuade her to take her glasses off for reading?

Thanks,
S
