Mirena coil users - have you gained weight?

I just can't seem to stop gaining weight despite really cutting down on food and doing exercise. Am convinced it's from the mirena coil and several of my friends have said they have the same problem. I'm going to ask my doctor to remove it but I know she's going to have a moan about it because it was only put in last Oct.

I want to know whether weight gain is a normal side effect of it.

I had a copper coil. I never really got on with it. I seemed to have constant bleeding varying from spotting to flooding and it completely messed up my previously very regular periods.
I only had it because I was persuaded to by the fpc as an alternative to the sterilisation I had asked for.
I can't say it made me put on weight but t did make my other menstrual symptoms much worse.
I have now been sterilised ...best thing I ever did!

i had a copper coil fitted at the FPC and i had constand bleeding/flooding etc for 3 months before having it removed.i never had those problems with the copper coil i had fitted before, and i have had my current one for over a year now with no problems atall,so i think the problematic one wasnt fitted properly.

i have never had any weight gain or period problems with this coil i have now.the first copper coil i had fitted when dd1 was 12months,as i'd been on the injection and it caused me to gain 3 stone as well as problems with mood swings etc.i managed to lose the 3 stone, plus the 2 stone of pregnancy weight i was still carrying, with that coil fitted.

i cant be steralised so im just going to keep getting this IUD replaced untill such times as i no longer need contraception.

I put on weight for the first time in my life with the mirena and my skin was realy bad. Had it removed and lost the weight pretty much straight away and haven't had a spot since.
May be a coincidence, but I don't think so..

I think wht you can deduce from this is that there are side effects to mirena and copper coils which affect a certain percentage of women. These are recognised side effects which are published quite extensively if you look. weight gain is one of the side effects that affects some women. The only way you are going to find out if you are one of those women is to try it and see.
The only down side to this approach, and this was certainly the case with my fpc, is that they may be reluctant to remove it until you have given it what they consider to be a fair time to settle down. In my case that was 12 months. That was the main reason I didn't try a mirena. I know it can make migraines worse and as mine are already horrible I could never have put up with them being worse for that amount of time. The fpc sited cost as the reason for wanting me to try it for a minimum of 12 months and said they were reluctant to fit one if I wasn't happy to give it that long. Thats why I had a copper coil....cheaper!!!

indeed.my FPC refused to remove my mirena coil, saying that there was no way it caused weight gain and i must have been over-eating(i dont think ive even managed to gain 10lb in a week over christmas so i dont see how that was possible!).they said i had to give it at least 3 months and only then would they remove it if it was defo causing proven SE's.

my gp was horrified and removed it for me straight away.

This is the third Mirena coil I have had fitted, they are excellent but take a while to 'settle'. However, this is the first that I have seem to have a few side effects, including weight gain and itchy nipples! I'm just going to keep eating healthily and keep an eye on things for now and hope that its just temporary...

Yes I gained loads, I was using the mirena & also on citalopram, was also doing SW but nothing was working. Was sterilised last year and the difference in mood, weight, sex drive etc was amazing, also off citalopram too. Glad I never have to use contraception again.
