Long - sorry
I've been directed onto this forum by other MNetters as I've posted on pregnancy already.
I'm 4weeks and 5 days pregnant.
I had surgery on my neck to remove a branchial cyst on Wednesday 9th April (I would have been 2 weeks and 6 days pregnant). I then took a variety of painkillers including 400mg of ibruprofen up to 4 times a day for 5 days after. (The others were co-codamol, diclophinac, lactulose, dulcolax, anti-nausea pills, zantac - I had a rough week).
I then found out I am pregnant, and immediately stopped taking anything. I wasn't trying - we had been in the past, but had stopped because I found out I needed the op and didn't want to risk it.
I went to the doctors today and she was very negative - ibruprofen has significantly increased my risk of miscarriage, and I can have a scan at 12 weeks to check the baby's alright, but many prenancies aren't viable. She implied I would be lucky to get to that stage. I left in tears and convinced this pregnancy will end badly. She told me all I could do was book in with the midwife, so I did - but don't go until next week.
I'm really anxious. One thing she didn't give me was facts or statistics. I'm also surprised that she didn't test me to confirm, or work out my dates, or advise me about folic acid (which luckily I already knew). She treated me like my pregnancy won't make it.
So, if anyone could give me actual advice about the use of ibruprofen and general anesthetic in early pregnancy, and the risks, I'd appreciate it. I don't feel the doctor gave me anything in the way of factual information about either of these risks.
Thanks
