I wasn't very well in work been having dizzy spells I had my blood pressure checked and came back high I'm back down Dr's tomorrow to have a ECG and full bloods and another blood pressure test. Even though it's high should I be very concerned or is this normal high and a average high to everybody else like me. I'm sure I got vertigo

Yes - it's high.
Normal BP is around 120/80.

Try the '478' breathing technique to lower blood pressure. Rest and try try not to worry.

Probably your GP will start you on a low dose of BP meds to get it under control.

172/96 is high. Be glad that they have found it now. I started on blood pressure tablets a year ago and feel so much better. I hadn't realized that I was unwell; but have lots more energy now. Hopefully, it will do the same for you.

Breathe in for 4 seconds
Hold for 7 seconds.
Breathe out for 8 seconds.

Repeat couple of times.

You won’t be diagnosed with HBP on the basis of one reading. Mine varies wildly from higher than that to completely normal but on average is somewhere between but on the higher side.

Your GP will very likely ask you to take 3 readings 2 or 3 times a day for a week with a home meter to get a more accurate picture of your blood pressure range or possibly arrange for a 24hr ambulatory device. If it’s consistently high they will then discuss options with you.

172/98 is definitely higher than it should be. Nothing that can't be remedied by lifestyle changes or medication so don't worry which will only make the problem worse (I know, easier said than done). Be glad that your doctor is alert to the problem and will do their utmost to bring it down. Was the reading actually taken at the doctor's? This can increase anxiety and lead to elevated readings, the condition is known as 'White Coat Syndrome'.

For comparison's sake, think of me one bank holiday last year spending the whole day in A&E when my BP was 225 over 90. They wouldn't let me go until the top reading was lower than 180, eventually it reduced to 172 (when I probably inappropriately blew the nurse kisses)

It's absolutely worth getting a home blood pressure machine. I had a stroke 2 years ago due to high blood pressure and mine was 196/110.

I'm now on medication and regularly check at home. Also don't talk while they are doing your blood pressure, make sure you haven't just eaten and go for a wee to empty your bladder. All these things can make it higher.

It's great that your getting checked over and that the GP is aware.
