I have had a separated abdomen ( 'Diastasis Recti') for the past year since the birth of my third child. The large split in my muscles has caused an unbilical hernia as well. I still look 4 months pregant. I have to have major repair surgery next year as my body will not heal anymore by itself. I've had big babies, ( 1 vaginal birth, 1 emergency section, 1 elective) very close together which obviously is a contributing factor. My surgeon says he says women with this problem every other week. I had no knowledge of this complication of pregancy before, so was really surprised when the consultant said it was common.
I have to wear clothes that cover the 'bump', I've noticed my posture is poor due to the weakened abdominal muscles and I still find it very uncomfortable, even though it has got slightly better over the year. My self -esteem has really plummted over this. I do get a free tummy tuck thrown in which is great but I'm not looking forward to such a big operation when my children are all still 5 and under.
If I do not have the op, I'll be like this forever with the risk of the hernia strangulating as I get older, so the operation is necessary.
I've not met anyone else with this condition and I'm sick of prople asking me if I'm expecting again!
Is there anyone out there who is a sufferer of 'Diastasis Recti' and what have been your experiences?
