soya milk isn't enriched with vitamins and minerals so it isn't suitable to give to small children; soya infant formula is OK, though.

cheesesarnie · 17/04/2008 21:12

right!thankyou.do you know of good link i can pass onto someone?

it's some soya milk sweetened aswell?

stripeymama · 17/04/2008 21:19

Ok, this is extreme... Butsoya 'milk' is not ok for very young children - too high in protein, and too low in fats and vitamins/minerals.

Soy formula is an acceptable substitute for milk if necessary.

Some commercial soya milks are sweetened, but not all.

mimitherabbit · 17/04/2008 21:21

No - it doesn't contain all the nutrients that young children need - nor does goats milk

forkhandles · 17/04/2008 21:23

vegan society give the same info about soya formula being safe but not to use soya milk until 12mths

eternalstudent · 17/04/2008 21:23

does something odd to teeth too. Stains them brown. Or did to my vegan friends' son

stripeymama · 17/04/2008 21:24

More here, andhere.

Soya formula is not recommended (even for allergic babies) unless they cannot tolerate anything else. If the LO is dairy-allergic then special formulas like Neocate or Nutramigen are better.

There are also potential issues with giving soya milk to boys because of the high levels of oestrogen in it.

The dietician dd sees advised not to give soya milk as opposed to formula until she's two

cheesesarnie · 17/04/2008 21:26

fantastic!thankyou!i didnt know it was same with goats!my ds had goats as he was intolerant to cows milk produce-seems to have outgrown it wooooooooooo!only reaction now is ezcema.we chose it instead of soya.
thankyou so much!

It was suggested for DD when she had a temporary cows milk reaction. It was after she was 1yr old so actual soy milk. She chucked it up seconds after it hit her stomach.

Maybe just her though.

cheesesarnie · 17/04/2008 21:30

ds wasnt keen!mind you the goats stuff stinks-he loves it!

Infertility.
Tooth decay.
Can cause allergies.

3 very good reasons why it shouldn't be given to under 2's at least.

Goats milk is actually fine for children, it is higher in some vits and minerals than cows milk but lower in others so obviously it works the otehr way for cows milk higher in somelower in others. The basic compstion is actually very similar.
It seems to be easier digested than cows milk and actually can be a good alternative to cows milk.
DS won't drink cows milk but loves goats milk, I don't mind it actually.
