How long are people usually in hospital after breaking a hip?

My dad broke his hip tuesday morning, was operated on wednesday afternoon, and he's saying they'll let him go home in a couple of days, a week tops. Is this normal??? I thought he'd be laid up in hospital for weeks. He lives alone.

they like to have you walking on it asap. Don't have any direct experience, but a neighbour of mine was out about four days after a hip replacement op - seems like it may be a similar op.

They do like to get you moving on the hip ASAP. Weeks of lying around is not good, espspecially for the elderly (not that I'm suggesting your Dad is old! )as that is when chest infections set in and prolonged stays in hospital = increased risk of picking up MRSA, clostridium deficile and other lovely things.
Has your Dad been offered any support when he gets home from an intermediate care or bridging team?? If not ask for it, no DEMAND it!

My mother broke hers late Maundy Thursday, was operated on on Good Friday, picked up a nasty infection while she was in hospital (which set back recovery by a few days), and was still out on, I think, Thursday of the next week (so within a week). The hospital physios and occupational therapists had to OK discharging her, though.

Stairs may be a challenge for a few days / week or so after discharge, and bending down or reaching up high similarly. Getting one of those grabby things for picking stuff up off the floor may be a good investment.
