How do you know if you have broken big toe?

Fell down the stairs, and my big toe was the first thing to crash into the wall. The bruising and swelling now coming out and I seem to be able to move it, however if I apply pressure to the top and put full weight to tip toe it hurts like hell, in fact I can't tip top. I can walk still, but just slightly conscious of it.

Unless it’s broken and bent into a funny shape, I doubt they’d do anything. Last time I was sent to A&E with a ? Broken toe they wouldn’t even X-ray it.
Painkillers and rest/elevate it.

Big toes need an x ray. Otherwise there's no way to know - some are obviously broken, others not so much.

Do you have a minor injuries near you? (Hopeful)

Yes, waiting times very high. Wondering if it's worth getting x rayed, if unlikely to need treatment. Will keep an eye on waiting times.

Broken big toes should be seen by a doctor - if it heals badly it can effect how you walk long term. The smaller toes are not so crucial, it's only cosmetic if they heal a bit crooked.

I broke my third toe and it looked like that. It hurt for about two months. I didn't seek medical advice as it wasn't crooked and was a small toe. I would seek advice for my big toe.

It does depend where the fracture/break is on the big toe, but some fractures need a boot or plastering.

You could give it 24/48hrs and see how it goes - I probably would over a Bank Holiday weekend, but it's probably not the most sensible thing to do.

Broke my big toe, it fractured down the length of one of the bones, xrayed and no treatment necessary. Have broken third toe subsequently and didn't bother going, but as a big toe I would get advice as feet can be funny and healing wrong can require subsequent surgery.

Xray.

DH has a broken big toe right now and only xray can diagnose, but you also need a non weight bearing support for it - he's in one at the mo.

Big toes are essential to walking, way more important than any other toe. Please get it seen.

Big toe is totally different to smaller toes.

The only way you are going to know is to have an xray . I broke mine right at the tip of toe, so a relatively minor break but I still wanted to know. I had to take it easy for a few weeks otherwise it would start throbbing.
