Pain relief after adult circumcision

Dd's young man has just had to be circumcised and was discharged from hospital with no pain relief and without adequate advice on pain relief. He's really suffering. Any suggestions?

Hopeful bump...

Ideally he needs to contact the clinic/ward to speak with a member of the surgical team

Paracetamol and ibuprofen alternatingly. Write down the times at which they're taken and take regularly, even if the pain doesn't seem too bad. What was he given in hospital? Obviously he should also make sure the wound is healing correctly and watch out for signs of infection.

WartOrNot · 22/08/2024 13:28

Paracetamol and ibuprofen aren't touching it.

Is he religiously taking the maximum dose allowed, every 6 hours (paracetamol) and every 8 hours (ibu)? IME (caesareans) it can take up to 24 hours to get on top of the pain. I appreciate he might need something stronger though. Maybe consult a pharmacy? There is some pretty strong stuff available OTC. What pain relief did he have on hospital?

justasking111 · 22/08/2024 14:23

Honestly time will take care of it unless GP is prepared to prescribe something stronger. I had 68 still post birth another sensitive area, nothing touched that either

Nursemumma92 · 22/08/2024 14:23

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are what are recommended, and to take the max doses per 24 hours. If this isn't helping he needs to contact his GP for further pain relief and a wound check to ensure it hasn't got infected. In the mean time if he is struggling and can't get hold of GP etc, he can get cocodamol 8:500mg from a pharmacy which are a mix of low dose codeine and Paracetamol.

DoctorLove · 22/08/2024 21:16

111 can prescribe stronger cocodmomol over the phone. Call them

How old is he? Hospital discharged me with oral morphine after an episiotomy surely it’s a similar level of pain?

FTMaz · 22/08/2024 23:28

Sorry just seen you said adult. That’s what I’d ask for.

TooManyNiblings · 22/08/2024 23:30

DH only had paracetamol and ibuprofen, was awful until he had taken about 3 doses as described then kept them up regularly until he started forgetting doses as he didn't need them.

Onehappymam · 22/08/2024 23:39

Solpadeine Max dissolvable is the strongest OTC pain killer & kicks in fast. It has paracetamol though, so you can’t take additional paracetamol alongside it.

You'd have thought so, and that's what I expected.

Thanks for the suggestion of Solpadeine Max. He's pretty sure it's not infected, but peeing is apparently agony.

He's been told that recovery will take at least one month, but doesn't know if this refers to just wound-healing, or includes him getting used to the glans being exposed.

I'm getting all this info second hand via dd, by the way, not interrogating him!

My son had it done when he was about 10 so much younger. I don’t remember him being in agony apart from the initial pee. He should get checked for infection and it took probably a good week for all the gunk to come off

WartOrNot · 23/08/2024 17:23

I think that morning wood does not help.

Did he have phimosis? Tight foreskin or fused after infections and circumcision only option?
If so the glans will take longer to recover and lose sensitivity because they have been covered and stuck after bouts of infections. This has been the case for our poor 11 year old boy. It is one week past now and much less sore on the tip but still very sore.
Hopefully for your daughters boyfriend he will feel more relief over the next week it will be more bearable and more and more so.
