Could this rash be a reaction to antibiotics?

I’m five days into a weeks course of antibiotics and have come out in this itchy rash all over my body. It’s hard to see it on the photos. I think it could be a reaction to the antibiotics.

It’s always possible. I’d take an antihistamine to help with the itching and then either see a pharmacist first thing or get seen at the nearest walk in centre/call 111 for advice about changing/stopping the antibiotics.

What does it say on the antibiotic leaflet that came with it? The one I am on says there is a high chance i could get an itchy rash from taking them especially if I go out in the sun. This was even printed on the sticker with my name on it. What does yours say? (And yes, I suspect it's the antibiotics you are taking).

WiganPie · 09/08/2024 22:16

It could.
Always read the leaflet of any medicines. Take an anti-histamine and seek advice from a pharmacist if it doesn't improve.

It says in the leaflet it can cause a rash. I’ve had lots of different antibiotics over the years with no rashes, but it’s the first time I’ve had these particular ones so not impossible. I’ve taken some antihistamines will see how it goes. I’ve only got two days of them left and really need to finish them if I can.

Keep taking them, get more anti-histamines. If you are feeling worse, seek advice from a pharmacist or the NHS helpline.

What antibiotics are they?

bfsham · 10/08/2024 11:18

Possibly....depends what the underlying illness is you're being treated for. Lots of illnesses have concomitant rashes.

Clindamycin

Do a search on Clindamycin rash photos. Some of them look like yours.

Could it just be a viral rash? Have you been given antibiotics for something that your gp thought might need them but it's actually just viral e.g. a sore throat?

Happyher · 10/08/2024 13:39

My daughter came out in a rash after taking penicillin- never happened before. She was about 22 when she got it. Gp can prescribe a different antibiotic

I don’t think it’s viral, I’m taking them to try and finally shift the MRSA that I’ve got.
