What is this part of my body called?

For the last few weeks, my back has been hurting in a specific place. Even if I lie down on my back on the bed, it still hurts in the place. Clearly I didn’t pay enough attention in biology at school as I don’t know what bones/organs/muscles are in that region.

if I put my hand on my back, a couple of inches below my waistband, it’s slightly to the right of centre. Is there anything important under there?

Look at an image on Google. It will be easier for you to identify it that way.

Sacro-iliac joint?

Kidneys?

If it’s a muscle and not an organ, it could be your quadratus lumborum - this muscle takes over when your glutes can’t be bothered to fire up. Give it a rub, then work on isolating your glutes to force them to fire up.

Thanks all. It’s hard to tell as there is plenty of “padding” (ok, fat) over the top. I’ve looked at pictures of quadratus lumborum and sacroiliac joint and they’re both around the same point.

I've found some stretches for the quadratus lumborum so I’ll give them a try.

thanks for your help.

I think I’ve had similar for the last few weeks. Rest has helped…think I must have watched every match at Wimbledon! However, now it’s getting better, the best gentle stretches that I’ve found have been child’s pose (don’t stretch so that it hurts, just a really gentle stretch). Also gentle ‘cat/cow’ and gentle bridge pose. These have made a big difference.
Best wishes for a quick recovery, but if you have any doubts, best to get a professional to have a look for you.

Google Don Tigny sacro iliac joint exercises. I've had this problem in the past and you get instant relief by his simple exercises to realign the SI joint.
