All my blood tests have come back as abnormal

Zaynab2945 · 06/08/2024 15:30

So I went in for a blood test last week, since the birth of my third child 9 months ago I have been feeling pretty weak and dizzy. I had a blood test in November 2023, and February 2024 and blood tests came back normal only thing that was an issue was slightly low iron.

I've been feeling more and more tired, my hair has been shedding quite badly, about 2 weeks ago I had dizziness and nausea for about a week and that's what caused me to go to the doctor, I genuinely feel very weak and exhausted but I was putting it down to my baby not sleeping.

The doctor told me it might be due to not drinking enough , the weather or having past issues of low iron.

Today I've checked my nhs app and starting having a severe aniexty and panic attack as I saw all my blood tests have come back as abnormal, low vitamin d, abnormal fbc, serum ferritin, thyroid, renal profile, liver, bone calcium hemoglobin ac1. I did have a postpartum hemorrhage at the time of delivery and had heavy periods starting 6 weeks postpartum but from November to February my blood tests have been ok apart from low iron.

They did prescribe me 3 months of iron tablets in February but I never took them because they don't agree with me, I just kept taking pregnacare new mum when I could remember

I'm only 26, I have health aniexty and seevere anxiety and doctor can't call me to discuss results until Friday, I keep looking at my baby and kids crying because I think I'm dying ( I hate health aniexty)
I've looked on my nhs app though and the thyroid, renal profile, liver profile etc are all within normal range looking at this so I can't understand why they are abnormal, only thing is they are slightly higher or lower numbers since February but still inside normal numbers.

Can someone please have a look at these and give me some reassurance.

But all the numbers in your screenshots are within the normal range? So why have they said they are abnormal?

LiterallyOnFire · 06/08/2024 15:37

They're not all abnormal at all.

Sounds like they sent you a text advising Vitamin D supplements, and they've given you iron. Is there one other abnormal? (It's hard to read in that format.) Most if them are in range.

What are you concerned about?

Snacksgalore · 06/08/2024 15:38

It’s very odd. The numbers are fine. I think the abnormal conclusion has been ticked in error.

Do you have your actual iron level. I couldn’t find it. The symptoms you describe are symptoms of having low iron.

LiterallyOnFire · 06/08/2024 15:41

What's going on with the platelet distribution? They've marked it abnormal but the number value is normal.

Make an appointment to get a full explanation. It's important you understand the full results and what they've done.

If they were worrying results, though, they'd be in touch urgently or even sending you to hospital.

LiterallyOnFire · 06/08/2024 15:42

Honestly OP, I wouldn't be worrying if those were my bloods.

No need to panic.

Georgethecat1 · 06/08/2024 15:43

I agree with PP the numbers look fine and even iron levels are lower end but still in range.

I think think they ticked the wrong boxes. Speak to your GP and double check

Zaynab2945 · 06/08/2024 15:46

These are the only ones I can see where there seems to be numbers that are not ok, in my full blood count the red blood cell, hemoglobin concentration and the haemotocrit, serum ferritin levels say 29 but in patients with numbers below 50 need iron replacement, and also serum inorganic phosphate is slightly high out of the range at 1.29 which I've googled is something to do with calcium.

That is what I thought all the numbers seem to be OK other than those so I'm worrying something is really wrong but at the same time how it's come back as abnormal, I've always had normal blood tests only ever issue is I have always suffered with low vitamin d and on and off anemia.

The majority of the results are within the range so not clear why it has marked as abnormal.

TheShellBeach · 06/08/2024 15:50

Definitely all within normal range.
Someone's ticked the wrong box.

mynamesnotsam · 06/08/2024 16:00

The way the system works is that most of those results come back on the same report and have to be filed at the same time. You can only choose one comment eg normal/abnormal and one action eg speak to doctor/no action needed for all of that set of bloods. Therefore if just 1 or 2 in that panel of bloods are abnormal then they all get marked as abnormal.

They've marked every single one of my blood tests results as abnormal, even though most seem to be within the normal range. I'm concerned because every single one they've marked the result as abnormal.
I've had blood tests alot in the past and even if one set of results are abnormal such as full blood count or vitamin d the rest of the blood tests results still come abnormal, this time all the results have come abnormal, liver, kidney, bone, full blood count, ferritin, thyroid they've all marked as abnormal even though they are all in the normal range apart from some parts of my red blood cell count, serum ferritin and vitamin d.

So I'm not sure if they've put it all as abnormal as a mistake as all the numbers are within range or if there is actually a problem.

It has to be a clerical error. (Surgeries seem to be struggling for decent admin staff these days.)

I would always trust the number over anything else.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/08/2024 17:43

You need to speak to your Gp, if you're anaemic that could explain why you're feeling so anxious as well as your other symptoms.

Are you eating enough? You can buy OTC multivitamins with iron in them so maybe try those.

Aussieland · 06/08/2024 17:47

You are mildly anaemic and that’s about it. They are not abnormal. Speak to your GP to ensure there are none of concern but they all look fine

PoopedAndScooped · 06/08/2024 17:50

If ONE is abnormal
They will ALL be marked as abnormal
Just how the system works

ALL YOUR RESULTS ARE FINE

You are a tiny bit anaemic but that is all
Liver, kidney, thyroid, Everything is on point

PoopedAndScooped · 06/08/2024 17:51

OP

TAKE THE ADVICE FROM EVERYONE

EVERYTHING IS IN RANGE! EVERYTHING IS FINE

DoubleYolker · 06/08/2024 17:53

This is just the way they arrive via the pathology system into GP notes. If one test is slightly abnormal, all tests in that particular panel are marked abnormal. So for example, if you are mildly anaemic, all the tests that make up the “Full Blood Count” panel will be marked abnormal. If you do enough blood tests, virtually everyone will have one or two out of the “normal” range but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything terrible. I can’t see anything there that you need to worry about.

Oh no its awful that that happened I hope your feeling better now.

Yes the only thing that was wrong with me is low vitamin d and anemia, I'm on iron tablets now for 3 months, the reason why it worried me so much is that with my gp it never usually marks them all as abnormal so I'm not sure why this time was different.

I do suffer wirh aniexty anyway but when I have been feeling so so ill since the birth of my 3rd child 10 months ago and the fact I haven't been feeling right at all when I saw them all marked as abnormal it made me physically even more ill for those few days it was awful.

I am now on the iron tablets tho and vitamin d and I am starting to feel so much better now from taking them.

Thank you for everyone's replies and help it did calm me down at the time and I hope this thread helps anyone who might go through the same.

I have decided in future though when I have a blood test I will not be logging onto the NHS app and reading them before the doctor contacts me after this, it made me really ill during those few days and it just feeds into my aniexty and isn't worth it.

Thank you again!!

Munchyseeds2 · 02/09/2024 19:22

you said that you haven't been taking the iron regularly
Take it every day with some vit C (orange juice)
I also believe that we should all be taking vit D (with K2) daily
Hope you feel better soon

LadyGabriella · 02/09/2024 19:33

They’re normal.

Knittedfairies2 · 02/09/2024 19:37

My blood results all came back as 'abnormal' too. I had to see the practice nurse to discuss and she just said that my cholesterol was a little high and I should consider taking statins. I asked her why all the results were flagged, and she said that's just how it's done, as mentioned upthread.

LadyGabriella · 02/09/2024 22:19

The NHS uses wide ranging weird parameters on their bloods. To be honest the absolute majority of blood tests on patients in hospital flag something as “abnormal” - but you read it in context and it’s often of no significance. Try not to let it panic you.
