Has anyone had a blocked salivary gland?

I've just been told by a GP that the lump I've been concerned about is likely one of these.

She was quite reluctant to tell me much about them, other than I could possibly have it lasered out if it is one.

She's sending me for an ultrasound to ascertain if that's what it definitely is.

NHS site tells me sucking on lemons or massaging it can help dislodge them, and that they cause pain while eating. I have had no pain while eating so I am not convinced that that's what it is but I am not a medical professional.

If you've had one could you share your experience?

Mine get blocked often. Warm pad for a few minutes and then gentle massage following the path the gland goes. It’s lovely when it unblocks 😂

Yes a long time ago, it would come up like a blister under my tongue from time to time and then pop (gross, sorry)

I saw an ENT Dr and he said it was probably blocked by a cyst and there was no point in operating as it probably wouldn't work. It eventually went away on its own. It didn't hurt at all.

An ex had them blocked by large stones. He swelled up like a gerbil and needed lots of water with meals - wasn't painful until they got really large and the stones had to be removed surgically (but that was in the 1980s and I'd imagine treatment has changed somewhat since then).

Yes, I had one a few months ago. I was absolutely fine all morning but hadn't eaten anything and had only drunk water. I went to have a bite of toast and instantly felt a sharp stinging pain in my mouth and the side of my face instantly swelled up. Went to the GP who diagnosed parotitis. Put me on antibiotics and told me to suck sherbet lemons!!

I didn't have any pain after the initial shock and it went down after a few days and unblocked.

Thank you all. I've had this lump for a few days, right hand side of my face. I've looked at the photos online and I can't see anything like that in my mouth! I am trying to massage the area.

I had one. It used to keep popping, all the gunk would come out and then swell up again. It was just inside my bottom lip so I looked swollen.

Dentist removed it with a local anaesthetic and sent it for biopsy. It was fine.

I had a swollen lump in my neck and swallowing was painful. It was a blocked salivary gland and it was removed surgically. Had to have antibiotics because of the infection. I was presented with a piece of calcium which was causing the blockage.

If it's a saliva stone (calcium) then lemon will help. If it's not then you need referring and a biopsy. Probably nothing sinister but there is a risk that saliva gland lumps can turn cancerous so protocol is to remove them.

I am going to the dentist tomorrow. Wonder if he'll do that!?

Ok salivary glands can be blocked for all sorts of reasons. So treatment if any will depend on what is causing the swelling that is causing the blockage.

Droolylabradors · 31/07/2024 19:16

Maybe. I had to book a second appt.

Mine was caused by biting my lip when I was stressed.
