Monster (15mo) has ear infection and was prescribed cephalexin yesterday. She was sick a couple of hours after second dose - is this usual? Out of hours GP says to persevere.First lot of abs, and experience zero, so grateful for any input x

(She's very poorly...........)

Side effects are: diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, headache, can cause allergic reactions, there are also a few odd ones but these are the main side effects. Poor thing. Lots of kisses and cuddles should help. I hope she's feeling better very soon.

noddy - I don't know. Was a really nice OOH Dr at the hospital and said Cephalexin was really well tolerated. I think both ears are affected - non-stop colds/viral infections since November, so I think it's all finally caught up with her. Not sure why not prescribed penicillin. Is it not as powerful?
Wish we didn't have to resort to drugs.....

any experience of cephalexin and LOs ear infections out there? Or any medical types who can ease my brewing panic attack?

Not medical but more info here. It sounds like this antibiotic is commonly used for ear infections. Some antibiotics are more effective at treating particular kinds of infections.

Hope your DD feels better soon

Thanx.
List of side effects making me swoon..........

Ear infections commonly cause vomiting.

Antibiotics commonly cause vomiting.

Unless, your LO is being very, very sick, I would persist with the cephalexin. Also make sure that she is dosed up with calpol/neurofen to keep the temp down and reduce any pain (both of which can make the vomiting worse).

Cephalexin was probably chosen because it is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and covers more bugs than a penicillin alone.

Thanks emma. OOH GP said it was really well tolerated so wasn't expecting her to throw up - was worried she was having an unusual reaction.
Will persevere - try getting her to eat something before her next dose.............

Don't panic about all the side effects. They have to report them even if it was a tiny percentage of people in the clinical trials who experienced them.

Lots of drugs have effects like, " may cause insomnia; excessive sleeping; loss of appetite; increased appetite."

Emma is right, ear infections in themselves can make you feel dizzy/nauseous as can any antibiotic.

Didn't mean to make you worry more . Just to say that vomiting is down as a common side effect so it's worth carrying on with the tablets.
