You may have finished active treatment for cancer, be in remission or NED. You want to look forward not dwell on the past. You know you ought to be eating well, exercising more and picking up the threads of your old life. Join us and share the ups and downs of recovery. We understand!

What It's Really Like To Receive a Cancer Diagnosis

This Mountain Lion analogy is a great way to help understand what it feels like to live with cancer.

Oh @dotty2 thats so hard. Think about what your df would want you to do. How old is dd? In five years time what will you look back and think?
what will you regret? Can you reschedule a treat with dd?Whatever, it’s tough. Follow your heart.

SierraSapphire · 26/07/2024 22:43

You can't be everything to everybody @dotty2 - go home and relax and have a nice day with your DD and go back on Sunday. Your DF will be fine with the staff. Think about it like leaving a toddler at nursery, the leaving is horrendous and you feel guilty but actually they have the perfectly okay time without you and when you go back they're fine interacting with other people. It could still be a long haul, you need to pace yourself. And it's absolutely fine to rest even when it's not DD's birthday, your health is a priority Flowers

Penguinsa · 26/07/2024 23:03

Good luck with radio Zoopet I found it super easy after chemo, hope the same for you.

Dotty I would go be with your DD for her birthday 🎂

ClashCityRocker · 27/07/2024 12:48

@dotty2 go spend your dd's birthday with her. It might not even be a bad thing for your dad to go through this transition with just the carers and staff - I know when DH was nearing the end and no longer exactly in his right mind he would 'act up' more when faced with a change or procedure and I was present...probably quite similar to kids at childcare.

Take the nice moments when you can - they may well be in short supply in the next few weeks.

Thinking of you.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 13:20

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. DD has gone to her punting job and DH is still in France so just me, DS and Floof today. Just been cleaning, watching Olympics and playing with Floof. The job on remote island got back to me with a written exercise which did on Thursday so that's done and now think its just waiting to hear. And no more news from hospital, phew so still on for 13th August atm.

TopOfTheCliff · 27/07/2024 13:54

I am back from visiting DM90 and packing for my Olympic trip. It’s 34 degrees where I am going. DH is going north instead for a few days. It will do us good to be apart for a few days!
I have a swollen right leg but I think it is just the heat affecting my new hip as it’s not sore at all.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 14:02

Have a lovely time Top and hope right leg resolves.

dotty2 · 27/07/2024 14:05

I am trying a compromise. Went home as planned, had a lovely birthday breakfast with Dd (now 17) and am heading back now. I had a very strong sense I needed to see him today. But that’s a useful perspective @ClashCityRocker Thank you. That must have been very hard. I may go home tonight but I should probably be sensible. Traffic is bad so it’s going to take me 4 hours to get there today. At another service station currently.

have a fabulous Olympic trip, top.

thesandwich · 27/07/2024 15:03

Have a wonderful time @TopOfTheCliff and @dotty2 follow your heart but also try and keep something in the tank for you.

SierraSapphire · 27/07/2024 16:23

Well. I was looking forward to a quiet afternoon sewing, I got back from lunch with a friend, and all of a sudden heard a noise that to begin with I thought was running water, but then I looked out the window and it turned out to be fire in a neighbour's garden and the shed and trees and the fence had gone up right by my car. The Fire Brigade have been here for three hours, my car is only superficially damaged, but a headlight is blown and wing mirror casing melted so not drivable on a public road. I've called insurance and it should be picked up in the next couple of days and I should get a courtesy car. My car is really old though, so it may get written off. I'd been thinking about getting a new car just before I got cancer, so maybe this is the prompt that I need, although I'm not keen to spend a huge amount of money at this point. Maybe my last week before employment is going to be spent taking test drives! I'm a bit shaken though, the fire was really fierce and they put it out in one place and then it started again in another bit of the fence.

Wow @SierraSapphire that looks serous! Glad no one hurt- but another hassle to sort your car.

Penguinsa · 27/07/2024 18:48

Sorry about the fire Sierra

Hope you DD had a nice 17th Dotty and remember to look after yourself as well.

tothelefttotheleft · 27/07/2024 19:08

@FairyWren7

Where do you have your treatment ?

Mine is in Canterbury.

MissMarplesNiece · 27/07/2024 19:17

Oh my goodness, @SierraSapphire , car stuff is always such a faff to sort out.

TopOfTheCliff · 27/07/2024 23:32

Blimey @SierraSapphire what a shock! Hope you get a good payout if it can’t be fixed.
I met a vet friend today who looked at my enlarged leg and pronounced it a hypertrophied muscle that side, not fluid retention. It’s an odd concept but maybe since the hip replacement I’ve strengthened that side more than the other 😳 Time will tell no doubt.

Thank you for the car sympathy, I know it's only a car and nobody died, but it means I can't get to my last Monday morning tennis session before I start work tomorrow, I'd already missed a trip to London on Friday because there was a problem with one wheel after getting the tyres changed, and I spent over £500 on it last week so I am feeling a bit sorry for myself! They may decide not to write it off but actually I hope they do because I need a new car anyway and it saves me the hassle of trying to sell it. Anyway, it made me really appreciative of the work that the fire fighters do, one of them I was speaking to who had crouched down next to the vehicles wearing breathing apparatus to fight the worst of it said this was only his fourth call out, he'd only just started.

This morning I have tennis that I can cycle to locally, then maybe I will get on with the sewing I was going to do yesterday afternoon! I need to go round and see my mum, I was supposed to go last night but was still feeling in shock and not up to it, and we were going to watch the sewing bee final although one of my friends texted me on Wednesday night to tell me who won, so that was annoying too!

Hope you're doing okay in the circumstances @dotty2 and have a great time at the Olympics @TopOfTheCliff - maybe you might win something with your over-sized leg Grin.

TopOfTheCliff · 28/07/2024 09:08

@dotty2 I hope you found your DF comfortable and are able to get some sleep. We found the Marie Curie night sitters very helpful towards the end.

@SierraSapphire which sports should I try out for? Olympic hopping? Standing on one leg? I’m watching the amazing girl gymnasts on the beam and lamenting my lost youth this morning. I found some photos at DMs house from a school leaving party when I was 17. I was so lovely and all I remember was the shame of acne! Interestingly I have a DN who looks just like I did at that age.
Have a lovely day folks, the sun is out here.

@SierraSapphire crikey that's scary! Thank god no one was hurt. Do they know how the fire started?

@TopOfTheCliff enjoy the Olympics! We're heading to Paris just after the Olympics with DP's little one. Have a couple of days in Disneyland too which I'm very excited about as always wanted to go when I was a kid.

@Dotty2 hope your DF is settling in ok and happy birthday to your DD.

I went to a mini festival type thing last night - saw Sleeper, Ash, Ocean Colour Scene and Embrace which was thoroughly enjoyable. We were reminiscing about last summer when I'd not long come out of treatment and my health just dominated everything - will there be places to sit? How long will I last? Will I be a write off tomorrow? It's nice now that I can do things and not worry too much about it.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 28/07/2024 10:16

@SierraSapphire - Gosh, that looks scary! You just never know what’s going to happen next. Hope you get a decent amount of money if they right it off, and it turns out to be a good thing in the end. Would your neighbour’s insurance cover it?
But, yes, horrible to have to deal with car problems- can take ages. X

SierraSapphire · 28/07/2024 12:23

Fire fighters said possibly a lithium battery, someone said they could see the remains of an e-scooter, so possibly that, there was an article in The Times about workplaces banning them for that reason. At least one of the neighbours affected doesn't have household insurance, it's not on our road, we have a residents' car park between our gardens and theirs' and their road is social housing so possibly people not able to afford insurance, but I guess my insurance company will work that out. My car's only worth £2-3k because it's old, I've had it 11 years. I'm crap at replacing things unless they're broken (last car cam belt broke in fast lane of M42 just after I'd had it serviced) - DD says that even when things break we don't replace and just use things broken, but that's more the cheese grater (and microwave mended with sellotape) than a car!

Penguinsa · 29/07/2024 13:55

Just got offered the job on the remote island. DH is away until late this evening. I don't want to say anything else on a public forum but happy to discuss over PM.

thesandwich · 29/07/2024 15:31

@Penguinsa oh WOWWW!! That’s fantastic news! For some reason I have a sort of Katie Morag image in my head ? Lighthouses and Shetland jumpers! Well done!
id love to know more so will pm.😉
@SierraSapphireI’m so sorry things are so shit- spotted your post on the elderlies board about your dm. hope you can get both things resolved and plan for the job.
@TopOfTheCliff hope you’re having fun! How’s your medal tally?

demivolte · 29/07/2024 15:41

Congratulations @Penguinsa, that's very exciting news!

@TopOfTheCliff fab photo. I hope the leg settles down (and am amused you've resorted to being assessed by a vet).

I hope you can get your car settled quickly @SierraSapphire, it must have been a shock.

The weather is fab here, work and school holidays are keeping me busy. I walked 20,000 steps yesterday and feel okay today so that is progress.

SierraSapphire · 29/07/2024 15:55

I know @thesandwich ! The accident repair company have just called too to say they're recommending writing my car off, which is fine but bloody awful timing. And I feel a bit sad as me and that car have had lots of adventures! (For everyone else, my DM is on the floor and the paramedics have just arrived after 3.5 hours!)

ClashCityRocker · 29/07/2024 16:21

Amazing news @penguinisa! Are you going to take the offer? It sounds like a great adventure xx

Sorry to hear about your DM @SierraSapphire and the write off. Gosh you're going through it at the minute! I feel like cancer patients should get a free pass on life's trials and tribulations for a good long time after.
