High white blood cells. GOUT/ Previous hip surgery

So my dad went to A&E due to swelling in his right foot/ankle,
His bloods came back to show he had high uric acid indicator for gout, however they had stated separate to this they can see his white cells show higher, from when he last had bloods done after a double hip replacement 2 years ago this year. The fact she said it was "unrelated to gout" now has my dad worrying. Is there anything else that would cause this? He's 53, and again double hip replacement 2 years ago, apart from that no other medical issues we are aware of. They have asked him to return in 3 weeks time for a retest???

I am not a doctor, there might be various reasons of high WBC. It could be infection, gout, rhematoid arthritis. Has he had uric acid test done as well?

Has he given any medication for his uric acid?

Sdanielle · 02/07/2024 21:45

Hey gracie,
Yes he was given antibiotics and chicozone ( think I'm saying that correctly) they then advised him looking at his blood work, the WBC seem alot higher compared to what it was post op on both hips, because they said it was separate to the gout this concerned him, as we are aware infection and inflammation causes this to rise. They say its not related..... x

I suggest if he avoids food causing uric acid to rise. Gout sometimes elevates the WBC. Tell him not to stress too much as stress can make things worse. Wait for another blood test in few weeks. Hopefully it will lower the WBC. Asks him to write down any signs and symptoms. If he is feeling very unwell (such us fever or disorientated etc.) Advice your dad to go A&E immediately.

Thank you, I'm only hoping the fact they have asked him to retest in 3 weeks time is because they aren't overly concerned, otherwise immediate action would be taken. However I'm not sure as they didn't even explain how high, they just stated higher than usual, and separate from gout 🤔 xx

Is your dad have any complains about his hip? Ask your dad to observe if the redness are spreading. If they gave him antibiotics and colchicine,it should get better if it is gout. If your dad go back in few weeks, and the foot/ankle still swollen and red, ask for a rheumatology and an orthopaedic doctor to see him for a definite diagnosis.

I suffer from gout and am on Allopurinol to control it.
I had bacterial pneumonia a couple of years ago. I had severe gout while I was in hospital. When I had largely recovered from the pneumonia symptoms my WBC remained high. I was still suffering from severe gout and was put on Colchicine, the gout cleared up in 2 days and WBC dropped like a stone.

That's good to know!
It was because she said this WBC volume is unrelated to gout he was concerned,
They phoned when he left and asked to come back in 3 weeks time for another retest, hoping its dropped x

He had a double hip replacement in June 2022, he would sometimes get slightly pains or in his back due to always walking with a hunch prior to surgery..... just hoping the three week wait for s retest means they are not overly concerned xx

Yeah - I was told it wasn't related to the gout when I was on the ward.
But when I came back to the Day Unit to have my bloods checked again and WBC was still very high, the doctor asked if there was anything I could think of that might be affecting it. So I said I was in a lot of pain from gout, she sat a moment thinking and said 'Yeah, that could do it.'

She put me on the Colchicine and it cleared up very quickly.
