Adult Epilepsy advice

Hi

Looking for advice please.

DH was diagnosed with epilepsy 18 months ago following a seizure whilst away with work.

He had an EEG which showed abnormal brain waves, MRI was clear.

He surrendered his driving licence then and just got it back. Doc advised they would start medication if he had another seizure in future.

Looking back he had had what we now recognise as short seizures / vacant periods before that one, usually approx 2 - 3 years apart and usually triggered by stress or sometimes when he had a drink (he is by no means a heavy drinker at all)

He thinks he had another vacant episode this week but no-one else was in the house - I came home just as he was coming out of it - so can’t verify. It certainly looked like it to me.

We aren’t sure what to do from here.

Obviously he’s back to not driving again, self imposed. We have 2DD and I’m nervous of leaving them with him, particularly the little one.

hesitant to go back to doctor and start medication because he has suffered with depression in the past which we suspect epilepsy medication will exacerbate. but we need to balance that with the risks of leaving this unmanaged - are they likely to get more frequent? Am I right that there a risk of small elements of brain damage with each seizure?

If he gets on the right medication is he likely to be able to drive safely? Or are we looking at a future with no driving at all?

Would really appreciate any advice on the path forwards.

thanks

I’m going through this at the moment and awaiting results of my mri and eeg. I’m not driving atm but haven’t got gone through the dvla process as it hasn’t yet been confirmed. I have v different seizures to your dh, they are mainly focal aware, a few over the course of 4.5 years. One every 6-12 months on average. I would rather not be medicated and not drive currently but if they became more frequent I would have to medicate I suppose. I have adult children so don’t have the worry of small kids about.
good luck to your dh. I know you have to be seizure free for a year to drive so if you need to drive then medication is the only option.
