Discoloured big toe nails. How do I know if fungal?

I have had dark yellow/brown/orange areas under my big toe nails. Just need to know best thing to buy to treat it. Should I see pharmacist or GP? Would a pharmacist know if it was fungal by looking at it? I don't want to waste GP's time if a pharmacist can deal with it. Anyone had this?

I went to my pharmacist and they diagnosed and sold me some medicine to try
drs can prescribe tablets but they sounded nasty with serious side effects to me so decided to try other stuff first

Ah that's good I can go to chemist and show them my vile toes (poor them😂) I didn't know if GP had to send clippings off or something. Will try chemist! Oh the joys
