We live in a flat in a building built in 1900. I've read a lot about lead dust from old lead paint which leaches into the atmosphere even if painted over. Ingested, it can cause all manner of nasties such as lower IQ, kidney damage, behavioral and learning difficulties etc. Apparentely loads of other countries test for this as a matter of course...anyone out there had any experience or can offer any advice?

I don't know but I would be interested to hear too. We live in a 1906 terraced house.

Well i'm going to see if the docs will test dd's blood for contamination...may sound paranoid but i'm really concerned.

Are you concerned for any particular reason, i.e, does your dd have any health problems? Or are you 'just' generally concerned? Please would you let me know how you get on at the doctors?

I read somewhere about lead pipes in older houses. It has stayed in the back of my mind since. I think I will try to do some more research on the net to see if there is any way of testing the water or whatever. I was also wondering if there is any kind of filtering system that works. I need to look into this further. I do feel as if I am being paranoid but, once you think about something like this, you want to get a definite answer to put your mind at rest.
