Gastritis and holiday triggers

Hello all. Over the last 6 months I’ve had three attacks of what I believe is gastritis. It has happened when I’ve been on holiday (two short breaks, one longer one). It seems clear it was a combination of too much food, and alcohol. I don’t drink a lot so a couple of glasses of wine everyday was too much.

My GP prescribed omeprazole (twice a day) and said to use Gaviscon double action too. She said to hit it hard at the start which I’ve done, although I keep stopping the omeprazole too early.

Does anyone had any advice for me other than the obvious? I have a holiday booked for later in August and I’d really like to have a better experience! Thanks

Start taking the drugs well before you go, don't wait for the gastritis to start.

I had gastritis last year. The triggers for me were ibuprofen and chilli.
I never have those now. I had an attack this year after eating a curry and omeprazole calmed it very quickly. I would never take PPIs long term but for the odd week or two they do an excellent job

DH always gets this on holiday and starts a daily omeprazole as soon as we go anywhere.

I used to take ibuprofen quite lot (chronic shoulder pain) so the GP was a bit concerned. I’ve stopped them now, hopefully no permanent damage

Maybe I need to do this proactively instead of reactively then. Thanks @Chewbecca

@Lovemycat2023 Thanks. My husband was in A & E a few days ago with what the doc thought was a gastric attack. They did bloods, ECG, ultrasound scan and CT scan to search for a cause but nothing showed up. They said such random attacks can just happen out of the blue, hopefully it won't reoccur!

Just coming back to this thread as I am going away at the weekend and started that burning sensation yesterday.
Just wondering how much omeprazole to take as I reach for the gaviscon?
