Why has my eyesight improved - 34 years old

My eyesight has improved from -5.50 to -5.00 and im 34 years old. The optician was concerned but said we would keep an eye (bdmm dmm tshhh) on it. She asked me if I've been unwell lately and i said no but in hindsight I've had stomach bugs x 2 and tonsillitis/ suspected COVID all since mid march and I'm now ill again, with what I thought was a cold but I've just noticed I now have a fever and feel achy all over.

Has anyone else experienced eyesight improvement at a similar age or know what could be causing this?

Thanks so much @MistyMountainTop . I think I am going to have to try the varifocals and maybe save up for a good independent optician to advise on better frames than I currently have.
My high street opticians really have been very good at prescribing and referring me to get further eye exams at the hospital etc but they just fall down on the quality of the specs and lenses. I guess it is that old adage of you get what you pay for .

I went from -5 to +1 between 35 and 41. I’m surprised your optician said you were too young for your sight to start changing.

@theeyeofdoe Could I ask you please if people with very high myopia cope well with varifocals? I have just been advised to have them but my eyes are 14.25 and -14.50 . The varifocal adjustment was 3 in both eyes.
I have been coping for years with sliding specs down my nose to read or removing them !

I am unsure about spending £100's on varifocals as I have hated the thick look of my specs over the last 10 years or so. I am very lucky to still be able to wear contacts as well . Thank you.

Do you do have cataracts yet? Lens replacement is your best option.

Varifocals do work less well in people with big prescriptions, you get more distorsion and they're more expensive - but yes, modern designs are good.

My sight is changing too.

I always needed glasses for driving and tv and wear them all day (shortsighted) but lately they have been hindering me.

My reading sight has deteriorated at the same time. Is this connected?

@theeyeofdoe Thanks so much for answering. I do have very small cataracts growing slowly at the moment and at my last hospital check up the surgeon said it was best to leave well alone until the cataracts were seriously affecting my vision. With severe myopia and the shape of the eyeball, it all has to be considered apparantly. Funnily enough , no eye surgeon has ever told me that they could replace my lenses although I know so many people who have had this done with good outcomes. I think I will "park" the idea of varifocals for now , thanks again for your input @theeyeofdoe!

I am short-sighted and temporarily went long-sighted when I developed type 1 diabetes. The effect lasted about 2 months after I was diagnosed and started treatment before they went back to my normal prescription.
