Non Healing mouth ulcer

Hi. So scared. I have a mouth ulcer on the roof of my mouth that won't heal. It's been there months. Tried everything. I had a biopsy a couple of days ago, and results can take up to 4 weeks. I am petrified. Obviously Google has sent me over the edge. 34 with two small babies and I'm so worried.

Have you been tested for coeliac disease? I hope it is nothing serious OP

IWantToBeASleepingCat · 16/06/2024 20:27

How's your B12?
First indication of B12 deficiency is mouth ulcers.

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 20:41

@IWantToBeASleepingCat I had my bloods done and I am low in Iron so they started me on iron capsules last week

But did they test B12?

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 20:42

@SuperGinger I have some bowel issues that they are looking into. Noone has mentioned ceoliac disease.

3 months! Do you drink or smoke OP? Any other symptoms?
Did you have a full blood count? What iron tabs have you been given?

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 20:49

@RickyGervaislovesdogs I very rarely drink. I vape. Smoke cigarettes about 7 years ago. Yes they done a full blood count. Got ferrous fumarate capsules

I'm in the same boat OP. It's on the tongue though. Am on two week wait now for my appointment.

I hope it's a good outcome for you. It's really scary. X

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 21:08

@bikeylikey awh it's a total nightmare. Are you waiting for your first appointment? How long have you had yours?

So you've got nutritional deficiencies, you're getting persistent mouth ulcers, and are having ongoing gut issues, and as far as you know they haven't tested for coeliac disease? Seems like it's something that's worth checking on to me…

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 21:19

@HammockFullOfRats just one persistent mouth ulcer in the same spot. Doesn't change and is painless. Used to be sore but not anymore. Yes just found out last week that I am low in iron. I have a GP app on Tuesday to discuss the bowel issues so I will bring that up then.

It could be they've already checked for coeliac disease in among the other blood tests, but they just haven't specifically mentioned it to you. Or that the medical details mean that coeliac disease isn't actually a concern. But definitely worth checking with them as to whether that's the case IMO — it's an easy thing to do initial tests for.

Dreamsunshine · 16/06/2024 21:35

@HammockFullOfRats thank you. Will definitely bring it up at the appointment.

Good luck — I hope you find out the cause, and that it's something manageable.

I understand that but, as pp said, it’s low b12 that can cause non healing mouth ulcers. You can have low iron and low b12 and b12 levels are set really low in this country. You can get symptoms but be in the low end of the normal range.
Do you have the nhs app? If you are in England you should be able to see blood test results on there to see exactly what was tested and what all your levels are.

Dreamsunshine · 17/06/2024 15:31

@LikeABondVillanDipshit no can't access the app in Northern Ireland yet. I will ask at the appointment tomorrow. Thanks

Hi all. Just an update. Biopsy results say there is no malignancy. Chronic ulcer with fibrosis. Have an appointment in 2 weeks time to look at treatment. They think my low iron was the cause though.
