We've all got to have this done tomorrow. My bastard lovely uncle has told us he's had TB for a while (reappeared after my grandad died) and has since dissappeared in a drunken haze. Because we all spent quite a bit of time at my nans where he was living we've been asked to have a Mantoux test tomorrow and then probably BCGs for the girls.

I've got a vague idea of what to expect but wondered if any of your little one's had had it and how they ere (and with BCG). DDs are only 5mo and 3, bless them.

I was thinking of telling DD1 it was a special vaccination that only girls got to have, plus lots of jelly babies.

Hopefully my uncle was talking out of his backside but I know it's better to be safe than sorry. Bloody that we are being put through this though.

I'd appreciated and comments. Thanks

The NHS leaflet for nurses etc (those taking the test) is here which shows pictures etc.

HIya
You have to have a Mantoux test to check for exposure to TB. You will have an intradermal injection (which means it goes under the first layer of skin) on your inner forearm. It leaves a raised bleb and will be read 24-48hours later. It stings a bit when it goes in, although the main problem for your girls will be keeping them still, you will have to hold their arms for them. They may need a BCG if they are negative, if they have been exposed to TB and the result is positive they may need a course of antibiotics used to treat TB. Jelly babies is a good idea and lots of distractions!

Thank you both. Had a look at the leaflet. Decided I'll have mine first with them outside with DH then DD1 and babes last. Will get some sweets and a comic on the way. Ironically, we have to be back at the hospital Friday morning with DD2's eye clinic so hopefully they'll be able to tie in the results for then too. Thanks again.
