HbA1c levels all over the place

I'm puzzled by this. My results have been stable at 42 or 43 for several years, and the blood test last September was 43. A month ago I had another test which they only did as they were testing cholesterol too, so did it anyway. It had gone up to 48. So the doctors told me I was now T2 diabetic and asked me to have another test last week. Got the results today and it is back to 43 again.

Does anyone know if this sort of fluctuation is normal?

Yes it is but even if you get back down to and remain at pre-diabetic levels or lower, your surgery will still class you as diabetic.
Try and avoid medication if you can. I had very similar figures to you but had to go on it when my level shot up to 95. Metformin is bloody awful - leaving the house can be a logistical nightmare and the prolonged release is not much better.

I'm pre-diabetic and have been for some time. I was trying to figure out why the test result had (as a random one-off) changed upwards and then three weeks later was back to where it normally is.
