How urgent is it to get an umbilical hernia checked?

Over the weekend I've developed what I think might be an umbilical hernia. It's very tender and I can feel a firmness above my belly button. I'm planning to call the GP tomorrow but wondering whether this is the sort of thing I should have checked asap (try to get a same day appointment) or if it's not so urgent and I could just take a routine appointment and be seen in within a couple of weeks. I don't have any signs that worry me about strangulation for example, just the fact that it's pretty sore.

Thank you x

I have this too. I am booked in for a hernia repair, but currently the wait is 18 weeks. I would get it checked as soon as possible. Time scale for me was, telephone appoint followed by a visit, 1 month. Ultra sound wait was 3 months. Now 18 weeks minimum for operation. So that will be at least nine months until you can get it repaired.

@Dottiethekangaroo thank you for replying. I will call tomorrow first thing and try to get a same day appointment. I didn't want to seem overly anxious and take one of the emergency appointments away from someone who might have a more urgent issue. But it is sore and as you say, would be great to get the investigations etc underway as soon as possible. Thank you and good luck with your repair when it comes!

I have a small umbilical hernia, just above my belly button. It was picked up by an ultrasound scan incidentally. My GP said no action required. I do get a sharp catching type pain sometimes when I bend over but otherwise it doesn't bother me. I suspect it's from pregnancy, now over 10 years ago.

@SpirallingMum that's really reassuring thank you. My DD is 18 months and since I had her, I've felt my belly button area wasn't quite as it used to be. Like there was a little protrusion just above my navel. It's never been sore though until this weekend and now it's really tender to touch and feels more pronounced. Hopefully I can get something done about it as the soreness has been affecting my day to day activities over the last 2 days. Thank you for your reply xx
