Had the start of some root canal treatment yesterday to be completed next week and I have woken up this morning with a face like a football - it is VERY swollen. Not painful but swollen. IS this normal or am I goinf to have to go back today?

Don't know but it didn't happen to me when I had root canal work done. Can you not ring dentist to ask advice before going back?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 04/04/2008 08:13

I have e-mailed her a link.

thanks for the reply - dentist is very close to DSs school so might just pop in after dropping him off and see if I can ask someone.

I would definitely call them, I work for a dentist and we treat swollen faces as urgent cases which have to be seen that day.

herecome - thank you

I guess I just found yesterday quite traumatic and painful and didnt want to have to go back but best not to leave it over the weekend

Yesterday was probably the bit where they removed the nerve which would be by far the worst, the rest will just be boring and lots of holding mouth open while they fill the canal. You may need some antibiotics though, am not a dentist but guessing maybe some infection has been released causing the face swelling, but no pain as nerve has gone now.

That's just an uneducated guess though, but the dentist should definitely check you over.

no not a normal occurance with root treatment, and ive had 5 of them

schneebly · 04/04/2008 12:35

Thanks everyone who replied - I have been back and they gave me antibiotics for infection. I will have the treatment completed at a later date.

I'm glad you managed to get back. And don't worry about the next part of the treatment, it won't be as bad as the first time

schneebly · 04/04/2008 12:43

thank you very much - I appreciate the reassurance

Any time, I wish the patients at work would say that, they are miserable
